The Canadian Election: Reactions from Around the Blogosphere

Oh Canada

Watching the live coverage of Canadian elections, I got almost fainted from the feeling how cool democracy is. I strongly believe that we, Ukrainians, deserve to live in democracy as well. So still so many things are to be done the way ahead. I want to live in free and democractic country and I want so much Ukraine to become so.

Because I love the country so damn much, I can't help but feel dread now that the Canada election is over and they've put conservatives in power. It's too soon to see what will happen, but I'm guessing that Canada will become more like the US in the coming months/years... and the thought of it makes me want to cry.

I have felt sick since last night when they started getting the polling results from the OTHER parts of Canada who have their heads shoved up their asses too far to see Harper's Horns. This man is the Antichrist, I swear, but all the churcheys love him. Don't get me wrong, I'm a churchey, but I can see the devil's horns! Gah.

So Canada now has a conservative government, whooda thunk it? What is this world coming to? well, atleast we wont have Bush again, after this. Im thinking about running! free candy for everyone!!! And lots of cool words rhyme with Molly so that could make for a pretty awesome campaign slogen. oh yea, and I will be eliminating math from planet earth becuase it gives me bad grades and nightmares.

I read something about Canada having an election yesterday. I didn't notice any Canadians threatening to move to America if they didn't get their way. Maybe they did. Maybe Canadian refugees are here already. I might not notice if they were here. If a Canadian falls in the forest, do they make a sound?

Like hell. I'd sooner see a trained chimp is the position. Hell I am sure a trained chimp could do a better job. When was the last time you saw a bigoted chimp?

What's up with the idea that we needed to "punish" the Liberals as a whole by giving the party a really hard spanking, as if it's some sort of errant child? I hear this again and again. The last time I checked, the Liberal party was made up of people. Several, in fact. Refusing to vote for an entire party and its policies based upon the actions of some of the people within it, rather than its overall track record and policy, is sort of like smacking a child because his brother stole your candy (ten months after the fact). Just because they're in the same family doesn't mean they're the same people. Furthermore, what on earth makes people think that an "culture of corruption" wouldn't just poison the next party that takes office?

Québec and the Bloc, meanwhile, ignored the rest of Canada like they always do, elected 50 BQs who won't cooperate with anyone unless Québec gets 3 billion a year, thereby making them completely irrelevant. The end result is enough Conservatives to form government, but more combined Liberals and NDP so that nothing will get passed. It's a bitch to have to call Stephen Harper "Prime Minister," but at least he won't be able to do any damage.

Harper makes the baby Jesus cry.

Conservatives form a smaller minority gov't than the Liberals just had. Even less will get done. Too bad none of the Communists or Marx-Leninists (not even sure if that's an official party or just that one guy local to here) won.

I hope that 1-2% sales tax cut is worth it.

Oh woe is we. I saw it coming and thank christ we didn't elect a majority. This is not the conservatives of yore (who were Victorian but not fanatic). Brian Mulroney effectively ran that party into the ground, spawning this mishmash of Reformers and Alliancers and Alberta right wing a-holes among others. Holy uckfay!!!!!

Unfortunately, the few Americans who noticed the Canadian election on Monday don't understand the results. We elected a 'conservative' minority government. We did this mainly to punish the Liberals for a scandal and for doing essentially nothing during their last few years in power. Because this is a minority government, the new bunch will not have the power to overturn same sex marriage, abortion or anything else we like up here. Rosie shouldn't fret. A Canadian conservative is still far left of center when compared with the smallest 'c' American conservative.
