Ever since I moved out of pedestrian-focused NYC and bought my first car I've been interested in the latest advances in automobile technology (not that I'll be able to afford anything new, the car I got I'm stuck with for the foreseeable future). Here's a few things I've read about though that will be coming to a car near you this year:
Driver-Monitoring Functions - Toyota has added a camera over the steering column with face-recognition software that determines whether you're looking at the road during situations where collision potential is high and gives you a warning to get your attention. I wonder if it can tell if you're drunk by analyzing the level of bloodshot in your eyes.
Blind-Spot Detection - Valeo Raytheon has developed a radar system that determines if a vehicle is moving along side of you in your blind spot and will warn you if you try to scoot over and into them. Awesome, I won't have to turn my head or use sideview mirrors anymore!
Mobile WiMax - Surf the web wirelessly in your car or in a train at speeds of up to 75mph when out of range of normal wireless base stations. You'll have to be driving around South Korea for this one though. The U.S. is more than a year away from setting up the infrastructure for this. Aquaman's plans for Mobile Commuting Suicide will have to wait I'm afraid.
