Mash Up Central

I really dig the whole idea of taking existing songs and combining them to create something totally new. Sometimes the result is a one joke gag but often a strange new creature will rise from the noise swamp to be born.

Get Your Bootleg On is the gathering place for the most creative minds in the genre and worth checking out.

My current favorite?

DJ AudioDile The Way to Dirty Fame [Don Henley + David Bowie + Queen + Gary Wright + God knows what else]

British Documentaries

The US TV companies continue to try and grab every dollar from the American public - today alone, releasing old Beavis & Butthead shows at $1.99 each in the iTunes Music Store. A pathetic effort to squeeze every last cent out of you all

Compare and contrast with Britain's Channel 4. I was surfing through their site tonight and I came across a section called “four docs” archive, with a list of some truly great British documentaries, including Nick Broomfield's amazing The Leader, His Driver and the Driver's Wife and Seven Days in Hell. At first I thought they were just trailers - but then I realized that the whole shows are there for watching, all free. Incredible. The flash player it uses is not the most bandwidth friendly, but if you're on a cable modem or better, I can't recommend this too highly.

Fastr

I've already wasted far too much of my time this morning on this, so now it's time to pass it on. Fastr is a multi-player game where you have to guess the subject of a Flickr image faster than everyone else playing. There's almost a zen quality to this, as you realize to win, you have to completely clear your mind of distractions.

Phunny

What do you do in your free time if you are Jorge Cham, when you are not focusing on brain-machine interface technology for applications such as neural prosthetics and developing a novel "smart" neural recording device with movable electrodes?

You write your own comic about grad school, you gain an international following, you sell books and merchandise. Of course
