If you're upset that Comedy Central killed this episode of South Park, you're probably an asshole.

This is gonna feel good to write...I've always believed Matt Stone and Trey Parker are two of the biggest douchebags on the planet, and "Bloody Mary" pretty much shuts the door on the issue.
Here's my take on things. Stone and Parker are basically a couple of trolls that have a lot more visibility than the usual morons on the Internet. You know...the ones who get a rise out of posting shots of stretched open anuses in discussion groups, just to be annoying. And guess what...if you're on a site somewhere ranting that Comedy Central bowing to the Catholic Church is censorship in it's most egregious form (or something to that effect), and Stone and Parker hear about it...THEY WILL BE LAUGHING AT YOU for being the lemming that you are. If you praise them for being the kind of protectors of the first amendment that this country desperately needs, than you probably think a dj who collects a paycheck for half a billion dollars is doing it for the same reason...and you're a jackass.
Here's a quiz. Let's say you have a little sister, and she was the victim of a violent sexual act. Your family, the local police, the school, basicaly everyone that knows her did all they could to help...because it's the right thing to do. But then, Stonefuck and Doucheparker got wind of it, and made a joke out of it on their really unfunny show, and it got back to you, opening up all sorts of closed wounds the family had, etc, etc, etc. Are you gonna be praising them as defenders of the first amendment? I'm gonna guess no, because there are certain things that just aren't done in a civilized society (honestly, I feel kinda gross just writing the sister thing) and creating a cartoon about a statue of the Virgin Mary...a figure that is incredibly important in the lives of tens of millions of people in this country...and treating her in the manner they did, is mean-spirited, hurtful, and just wrong...case closed.
I know there are probably thousands of people who will disagree with me on this, saying it's cases such as these where letting the content run is the real indicator of the freedoms we enjoy in this country (like letting the clan march down Main Street, and all that) and 9 times out of 10 I'd agree with you. But, is common sense really dead? Can't we see some things and just say...you know what, that would hurt a whole lot of people, and we're not gonna do it because of that. I can hear you saying it now..."Well, you don't have to watch". But you didn't have to watch the show about your little sister, either. Still...how's it feel? This is gonna sound so cheesy, I may have to bathe after I write it, but remember the golden rule. If you wouldn't want someone doin' it to you, why are you doing it to them? (can't believe I just said that) Jesus, common sense and human decency don't have to be the opponents of civil liberty.
That's it, just needed to get that off my chest. I feel better now. (You should all get a blog...it's cathartic) Actually I hope no one reads this...people on soap boxes are usually pretty annoying.

PS: If you've ever read anything I've written here, you know this isn't like me. I'm usually way on the liberal side of things. I can't wait for 2008 to come, I don't think there's any war on Christmas, and being raised Catholic, I know how hypocritical the Church can be on certain issues. So...forcing someone to take a conservative stance on an issue...that's another thing you can blame on Stone and Parker.

Go Jellio! I too am all for freedom of expression. Some people (or ideas) deserved to be skewered. But humor that is mean just for the sake of being mean is unfunny.

You, Jell, are getting in a huff over what is real and what is not. The perception is clouding what you should really be angry at.
As one who was also raised Catholik, the old school way, complete with our nuns who killed children and priests who always had their pants down, and who has become a bit on the conserative side also due to the sociatal pressures and failures afforded me, I tend to be a whole lot cynical and a just a bit more bitter at everything that is supposed to be termed 'good for you' in this rapidly-spinning piece of shit we call Earth, and normally this sad little side of me would agree with you.
But, in the whole scheme of things, I expected better from you than just to drop a rant like this. Let me preface a sec: I've always taken a bit of a supportive role in some of the things you have written here when others have told you to fuck off, and this is still my number one bookmarked spot because frankly there is a certain amount of freedom you guys let slide, and this is a very good thing, as Billy's dad would say from the cornfield!, and although we may have disagreed in some areas, I liked your chutzpah.
Now for you to spew the way you have on Stoney and Trey, no matter how juvenile or retarded they have become lately, is to say overall they suck as a whole, and then this gets a bit serious, and this is when I emerge from my batcave to their rescue - of sorts.
Please, let's look at it for what it's worth.
There has always been sarcastic shits like them around for a billion years. There will always be someone, no matter how perfect we want it to be, who either stand in the light like them and fling shit, or cower in darkness and randomly tear a new asshole into the President, society, religion, and almost everything you can name.
Like me.
However, you have to be objective, no matter what, you have to take it all with a grain, no matter how badly it makes your blood boil. For you to dismiiss them and call them "trolls" is like calling our government "honest," or "forthright," or "the best free legal system anywhere," or... but I digress.
For every Bloody Mary, there is a weekly "press conference" in which our "legally-elected president" "takes questions" from our "free press." For every person who hates this country and it's so-called "leaders" for systematically killing off our best and not-too-brightest, there is someone who is just as (stupid and) willing to die for it and especially what it stands (or not) for.
South Park needs to exist to snap us back into what we may or may not believe in, and it's in part because of their kind of satire that we still can be the individuals we are. Common sense, common schense, buddy.
I know you get it, and it hurt your little sensibilities, but they have skewered millions, they have been able to be let go just enough to tear down what we all secretly mock at one time or another, whether it's being white trash, gay, overtly proud of being religious, or Tom Cruise. (Or all of them, wrapped up into a neat little 5-foot-1 package, who is an actor in Hollywood - allegedly.)
They are all that's left of to be angry at, laugh with, or simply turn our heads and wonder, and they are following in a very long tradition of being popularized by the very people who hate them.
In fact, I can safely say that because of this show, and only a few other outlets I can still turn on and get the occasional chuckle, I am still - but just barely - proud to be American.
I am just like everyone else here, and depending on who you are, you are either proud of, or hate - also depending on who you are - the KKK, the ACLU, Howard Stern (ALL 25 years of him, not just his last sterile 2 or 3 years), the NAACP, the DAR, the CIA, the FBI, NSA, the Carlisle Group, black helicopters, and of course, South Park.
This all comes at a cost. We all have to sacrifice. We all have to let something go these days to be "free," as the Last Great Prophet George Orwell once said.
I have seen ordinary people in the last 4 years de-evolve, and become paranoid, and drop dead from everything, and be angry, and spew all day til their hearts can't do it anymore.
Like me.
Sure, South Park is sometimes shit, and maybe it makes you want to grab that rifle and scope in your den and head toward some rooftops near Comedy Central and wait for them, but guess what, Jellio? I sometimes want to wait outside your offices, too. And maybe sometimes a little white house in DC.
Just like everyone else, and of course, like no one else. We need to have that hate, or love, to fuel us in this country, or will we not become the very pieces of shit we propose to spew on?
Jellio, I disagree with you.
Jellio, I agree with you.
See, that's how easy it is.
Get over yourself.

Sorry to disappoint Johnny, but we're gonna have to disagree on this one.
You know how I feel about the current administration, and what they're doing to our personal freedoms. I've made it clear I rank Bush right up there with leisure suits and ghonorrea on the all-time sucky list. But I never needed something like South Park to remind me of how I should feel.
Also, this one act didn't turn me against them. I've never thought the show was funny, and every time I've seen them in an interview, they act so full of themselves, it's obvious they've become what they used to mock. Bloody Mary was just the proverbial straw, and seeing comments on so many sites that put them on this noble, 1st amendment fighter pedestal was just too much.
But that's cool - agree to disagree. Still appreciate the support, and I'll always back your "take aim from the book depository" rants
I installed bullet-proof glass the day after I read your first post. So, fire away. It's good for the soul.

Jellio & Johnny - just wanted to say thanks to both of you. Most interesting and well-written dialog I've read this week.

Glad you have your opinion, and maybe the episode wasn't funny. But a bleeding statue isn't nearly as personal as a violent crime against a close relative. I don't mind your stance, but I disagree with the comparison.

This is a joke right?

The funniest part of your rant were the four, count 'em four, ads for South Park merchandise that were mixed in with your paragraphs.
Me personally, I don't care if people want to worship a statue, or a figure imagined in an oil stain on the street. If you don't want to watch a tv show, then you should simply turn it off, or maybe just turn the channel. I understand the PAX network is very family friendly.

Trust me...I am SO driving the "just change the channel" bus most of the time, and I'm well aware of the ridiculous nature of my argument, in that, if I get to decide an episode of South Park is over the line, what's to stop someone else from taking away something I really like because they don't agree.
When it comes right down to it, I guess I was just bummed about the mean-spiritedness of it, especially during the holidays. Just another example of how we respond, in MUCH greater numbers, when we see people people being harmed rather than helped. Which is also basically the number one reason reality tv is as huge as it is...fighting, lying, deception, back-stabbing, we eat that up like tic tacs. Don't get me wrong, I'm no different. If I didn't lap it up just like everyone else, I'd probably, like move to Canada or something. But that ain't happening in this lifetime.

they made a joke out of a statue of the virgin mary? so what. organized religion has been making a joke out of the devout for a few millenia now so whats the big deal? catholicism and christianity began as a method for government to control people and bring in revenue. there's far more evidence to support this than there is proving any of the far-fetched ideas these religions are based around.
way to worship a well written STORY, good job guys.
