TiVo Announces Partnership We Announced Last Summer

TiVo-logo.jpg

Last summer, I started a running feature called "Big Ideas for TiVo." I ran out of Big Ideas rather quickly, and the feature was soon abandoned.

But when you write for one of the top twelve entertainment blogs in the world, you never know who's reading. Apparently, TiVo was, because they've put into action #2 on my list.

OK, maybe it's not EXACTLY the same idea, but it's a Big Idea for TiVo that I look forward to using. For those reading this at TiVo (and we know you are), how about a free Series 2 box? Or at least one of those TiVo logo dolls?

From the TiVo/Yahoo! announcement:

How do I schedule recordings on my TiVo® Series2™ DVR?

• Yahoo! and TiVo have partnered to give you the ultimate remote control: the Web!
• Now you can schedule recordings on your TiVo® box from any internet connection.
• From any Yahoo! TV episode page, just click "Record to my TiVo box."

Your request will be automatically sent to your home the next time your TiVo box connects. Please allow one hour if your TiVo is connected to broadband through your home network, 36 hours if your TiVo uses dialup.

From my post on July 21, 2005:

2. Make a deal with AOL Instant Messenger. You know those ads on top of your Buddy List? (iChat users, think back.) "Lose 15 pounds this weekend. Click here!" TiVo will buy that ad space on everybody's desktop, and promote shows. Here's the cool part -- all you have to do is click on the ad, and that will send a message to your TiVo to record that program. See an ad for Mindfreak in the morning, click it, and when you come home, the show will be waiting for you. TV networks must be willing to pay more for that space than Fat-Be-Gone, Inc., so AOL wins.

This is the first I've heard of this, but I've got a DirecTivo and don't know if that works with it. Any thoughts?

By the way, this is my first visit here and I'm quite pleased with your topics, your depth of content and your general lighthearted nature.

Keep up the good work.

*Yes, I have a blog. Write to me if you want the address. How's THAT for anti blog spam?

Later,

Jeff

This only works with series two Tivos, and I'm not sure they ever brought out a Series 2 for DirecTV (I have the DirecTV one too).

Thanks for the kind words on our site, Jeff. Always nice to receive a little fan mail.
