My last post about the remix of Holiday that was mentioned on BoingBoing got me thinking about Gary Glitter, who's Rock n Roll Part One is also liberally sampled throughout.
If you didn't grow up in England in the 70s, it's hard to explain just what a rock GOD Gary Glitter was. With twelve consecutive Top Ten singles, the man was a legend in the UK. While I was too young at the time to go see him in concert or dress in glitter, I had the 45s, posted his picture in my scrapbooks, hell - I was even in the Gary Glitter Fan Club. I Love You Love Me Love remains one of my favorite 70s tracks.
In case you don't remember what happened next - in 1999, his position as the grand old glitter grandaddy of British Pop came to a sordid end when he took his computer in for repairs, and a mass of child pornography was found on the hard drive. Found guilty, Glitter was sentenced to two months in prison as a sex offender, before fleeing the country and going into seclusion. He moved from Cuba to Cambodia, to Vietnam, with rumors of darker impropriety following him.
And so we come to the latest news. Glitter is currently in police custody in Vietnam, accused of having sex with a twelve year old girl, a crime for which the maximum punishment - if he's convicted - is death by firing squad.
Has any other figure in contemporary music fallen so far - chart-topper to possible execution?
