Changing The World (Unless I'm Busy Or It's Cold)

If you fought the good fight in the '60s -- for Civil Rights, against Vietnam -- how disgusted would this post make you? (From DemocraticUnderground)

Sometimes I just get so mad that my country is committing mass murder. What power have I to stop it?

I am going to start reading up on Ghandi. This is the breaking point. I have to do something drastic, like go on a hunger strike chained to a light pole next to the NBC building in Chicago. But it's starting to get cold and I have my thesis to work on and classes to finish up this semester.

When I graduate in May, if we are still at war, I will honestly be about doing this. I can go for weeks on a diet of a handful of rice per day. If it's Summer, I won't die of cold, either. I wish I had done this this last Summer.

Maybe I can get 20 or so people to do this with me. Maybe we can lie on the street covered with cow blood for weeks at a time and say we are calling attention to the murders of our own troops and Iraqi civilians. And only until the war has ended will we feel good enough to eat again. I could surround myself with pictures of dead soldiers and Iraqis.

Do you think it would work? Do you think the Chicago police would arrest me and take me in? Would you be willing to join me in May?

For Peace, When Convenient.

Greatest Internet Moments

mahir.jpg

Aolwatch.org has compiled a nice (though wretched looking) list of internet memories to browse through. Remember Mahir (pictured above)? Or Jenni Cam? The original South Park video? Sissy Fight? How about those crazy Amazon.com reviews of those Family Circus books?

There's good stuff here but I'm left wanting more. There must be more to internet history than this. How about all the Wazzzup parodies? The Thundercats outtakes? All Your Base Are Belong To Us? What else have we got?

Ugly Animal Kingdom Presents: The Deep Sea Angler

Wartyanglerfishglowlr2

The category Deep Sea Angler describes the over 120 species within the sub order Ceritiodea. Their large jaws and distensible stomach allow the female angler to eat prey as large or larger than themselves. The anglers are noted for the bioluminescent lure which serves to attract prey in their low light environment, 300-4000 meters deep. Interestingly, the lure is only present on the female angler fish, and is used to attract males. The male is approximately 1/20 th the size of the female, and has large eyes to assist in spotting a female lure. Once a male encounters a female, he clamps on to her flesh in a parasitic fashion. His entire anatomy atrophies until he is organless, with the exception of an overgrown testis, functioning only to fertilize the female's eggs. At this stage, the angler is considered sexually dimorphic, with both male and female reproductive organs, technically capable of self-fertilization. Female angler fish have been observed with five to six parasitic males attached.

Full of Smits

In a history-making episode of the West Wing last night, Alan Alda and Jimmy Smits duke it out live while ineptly moderated by Forrest Sawyer. The only thing more boring than a political debate is a fake political debate. The one redeeming element of this show was that the actors had to perform it live twice, once for the east coast audience, and once for the west coast audience.

TiVo Announces Partnership We Announced Last Summer

TiVo-logo.jpg

Last summer, I started a running feature called "Big Ideas for TiVo." I ran out of Big Ideas rather quickly, and the feature was soon abandoned.

But when you write for one of the top twelve entertainment blogs in the world, you never know who's reading. Apparently, TiVo was, because they've put into action #2 on my list.

OK, maybe it's not EXACTLY the same idea, but it's a Big Idea for TiVo that I look forward to using. For those reading this at TiVo (and we know you are), how about a free Series 2 box? Or at least one of those TiVo logo dolls?

Heart and Soul of the NFL

Chrebet.jpg

Anyone watching the Jets game yesterday saw Wayne Chrebet's head bounce about ten inches off the turf, while still making the catch. The glazed-over look in his eyes lasted for at least five minutes, and today's papers say the trainer had to help him untie his shoes. Chrebet represents the best the NFL has to offer. but concussion number seven means it time to hang up the cleats.

Good luck Wayne, you were awesome. Time to count your money and spend some time with the wife and kids.

Gallery Walk

Ryan4web.jpg

Visited a few galleries this weekend. I mentioned the Deitch Projects Ryan McGinness show last Friday, His paintings are awesome, and he make's a really funny t-shirt every now and then, too.

Also, a very cool show at Luhring Augustine in Chelsea asked ten artists (big ones...think Damian Hirst and Rachel Whiteread) for their take on the game of chess...lots of fun.

(PS: the image above is from the McGinness show at Deitch Projects. Congrats to my sister who bought the pretty blue one on the far wall. Like I said, it's bound to go up in value...trust me.)

DC Comics pays tribute to YesButNoButYes

Catwoman50

Well, kind of...

Regular readers may recall that I'm friends with Adam Hughes, one of the hottest cover artists working in comics today. Famous for his Wonder Woman covers, Adam is currently the regular cover artists for Catwoman.

Adam once asked me about the Scaramouch pen name, and I told the story of how I used to work as a semi-professional magician in London (meaning I earned half what I needed to live), and that was my 'stage name'. I used to perform Bizarre or Seance magick - ghost stories and sprit effects. Much hilarity and guffawing followed from Adam, and resulted in a convention sketch he did for me at Baltimore which I talked about here.

Well, it seems Adam had another, much bigger surprise in store for me....

Breakfast Links

- Bill Maher takes us through partisan products we'd like to see.
- For the frustrated male bra shopper, or just the frustrated male, the virtual breast wall.
- From last night's Family Guy poke at censorship, the Freaking FCC Song.
- Have you seen the hysterical NBA TV campaign starring Ali G...it's tingly.
- And finally...definitive proof that Paris Hilton has one facial expression. (turn your volume down a bit)

404 Error

Whoops! We're not sure if it was your fault or ours (probably yours, we're good that way) but you've encountered a FATAL ERROR!!! Or at least, a pretty grumpy one.

Specifically the Latvians who run our server are telling us in a weird accent "Smarty error: [in evaluated template line 6]: syntax error: unrecognized tag 'mtfeed' (Smarty_Compiler.class.php, line 580), Comrade!". Ain't life a bitch.

If you want to vent, email our slacker of a webmaster. Otherwise, we'd suggest going back, using search, or clicking around aimlessly on this page like a moron.

Have fun.
