I'm not well-traveled. Poorly-traveled is more like it. So forgive me for being naive.
How much are you supposed to tip the guy who provides curbside baggage-checking services?
Flying back from Florida yesterday, I was sure my bags were headed to Guam.
Upon arrival at the airport, an official-looking man walked over to our cab. "I'm your official baggage porter," he declared. Checked us in right there, then put our bags on a dolly. This took about 15 seconds. Then he waited for his tip.
To me, the debate was between not tipping and tipping a small amount, with not tipping the heavy favorite. But I figured I'd placate the man and throw him a dollar. I worked for four years delivering food, and remember that getting snubbed is a world away from getting a dollar.
He sarcastically thanked me for my generosity. Then he laughed and laughed and laughed. Sinister. That wasn't going to coax another dollar (or, gasp, a five) out of my wallet. But it made the next three hours pretty nerve-wrecking.
I was shocked when my bags actually arrived in Newark. They were last off the plane, but I'm not sure a curbside porter has any influence on the order luggage is deplaned.
So, am I the bad guy? How much did he deserve?

$1 per bag, dont let him goad ya- they are jealous of all the other airline workers above them. They don't have union representation and the attituse is steadily worsening from all porters.
check their bitch-asses by not caving...
I agree, $1 per bag. Although, I don't use them much anymore, it seems to complicate matters for self-service check in. Do I check in, then go back outside to give him my bags? Check my bags otuside, then check in? Too tough for my addled brain.
if he helped you its $5 - all in unless there are lots of bags.
sorry baby thats the rules
$5? Where can I get me an application?
Don't let them take your bags. The "I'm your official baggage porter," is BS. He got you.
I agree with DLX. There are about a million signs in the airport to not travel with unsolicited taxi drivers. I would assume the same rules apply to "official baggage porters".
The bags arrived safely. Strangely, there was a large amount of uranium in one that I don't remember packing. (The other bag had the exact amount of uranium we packed.)
