Top Ten Violent Death Scenes
199 Comments

ScarfaceIntroWeb.jpg

HAPPY HALLOWEEN EVERYBODY!...how 'bout some good old fashioned movie violence.

These days, certain video games are getting all the ink for being too violent, but we should remember Hollywood's been cranking out the blood and guts for decades, and alot of it's been ten times sicker than any playstation game out there. Honestly...a couple of the movies on this list...after I watched them I was like, why would anyone put that on film? SO LET'S TAKE A LOOK, SHALL WE?

A couple ground rules. I didn't include any pure slasher movies. So you won't find Kevin Bacon getting the arrow through the mattress from Friday The 13th, or that kid that got the shish kabob through the back of the throat from Happy Birthday to Me. (would've been too random) Also, not all death scenes on the list were actually "on-camera". After all, implied gore can be just as intense as in-your-face, you know? And finally, since there are probably about ten bazillion ways you could go with this, feel free to tell me which scenes you would've included. Let's make this death list a fun, group event...k?

So, as someone once said...Roll the ugliness.

10) 28 Days Later - The Eye Gouge
28DaysLaterWeb.jpg
The closest thing to a slasher movie on the list...it was between this and Robocop for the scene where the doctor from ER falls in toxic waste and get liquified by a speeding car...but I digress. Toward the end of this movie, you're sure you've seen just about every way for a zombie to kill a person, or vice versa, and to be honest, you knew the evil army sargeant was gonna get it hard, but when the hero grabs his head and sticks his thumbs all the way through the guys eye sockets...whoa...didn't see that coming (no pun intended).

9) American Psycho - The Hatchet
AmericanPsychoWeb.jpg
No, I never did read the book, and I heard it was much more graphic than the movie, but I still thought the flick had some pretty freaky death scenes, most notably...Jared Leto getting the axe to the face in Christian Bale's spotless apartment. This is one of the off-camera death scenes on the list, but I gave it style points for having Hip to be Square playing in the background. Also, bonus points are given to any perpetrator that appears to be having a really good time during the act.

8) The Hitcher - The Girlfriend Splits
HitcherWeb.jpg
I've always liked Rutger Hauer, ever since Blade Runner he's been great as the really intense evil dude, and in Hitcher, he was at his all-time nastiest. If youve never seen it, Mr. Hauer is a hitchhiker who does everything possible to screw with C. Thomas Howell, including kidnapping Jennifer Jason Leigh, tieing her to two separate eighteen wheelers, and putting one in drive. Another off-camera act, so you're left to wonder if all four appendages popped, or was it a clean break at the waist. (Don't feel bad, she takes her revenge on men with a stilleto in Single White Female)

7) Bonnie & Clyde - The Showdown
BonnieClydeWeb.jpg
I've included Bonnie and Clyde for a few reasons. It's the only movie listed here that came out before the 70's, it's one of only two true stories, and it was an awesome scene. Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway get completely riddled with bullets. (apparently just like they did in real life) in one of the most classic death scenes in movie history. Here's another interesting fact. Bonnie and Clyde came out in 1967, was made for $2.5 million, and grossed over $50 million...violence sells.

6) Scarface - The Shower Scene
ScarfaceShowerWeb.jpg
It was the opening shot, so you knew I was gonna put it on the list. But I'm not including Scarface for the final death scene. That was cool, but I remember it more for being kinda comical, not intense. (How many shots was it gonna take, anyway?) The scene I'm including is when they hack up Tony's friend, Angel in the shower with a chainsaw...and they make Tony watch. Once again, you only see spray, but watching Angel's face start shaking violently...whoa.

5) The Godfather - Sonny at the Tollbooth
SonnyWeb.jpg
It's intense...it's violent...it's The Godfather. Sonny at the tollbooth is classic. Something like 200 squibs were put all over James Caan's body, that's dedication to the craft. I saw this when I was like 12 or something, kind of intense for a kid.

4) Silence of the Lambs - The Cage
SilenceWeb.jpg
The greatest villain in movie history, Hannibal Lector gave new meaning to the phrase "serial-killer", and he did it with such style. Anthony Hopkins was amazing as the carniverous doctor, and the scene in the cage that included a) beating someone to death with a night stick, b) disembowling same person and c) slicing off and wearing another person's face...that's some serious violence. Oscar-worthy violence, you might say. He continues the nastiness in two more flicks (slicing the top of Ray Liotta's head off was a nice touch) but the first will always be the best.

3) Natural Born Killers - Rodney in the Fishtank
NaturalBornWeb.jpg
Here's where we start getting into the "man, did I really need to see that?" movies. They say you either love Natural Born Killers, or you hate it. I still don't know which category I fall into. I actually am an Oliver Stone fan, but the killing in this flick...Jesus. I get the point, we're a society that craves violence. We slow down when we see an accident, we love watching Cops, we make lists of the most violent...never mind. Anyway, the scene where Woody Harrelson drowns Rodney Dangerfield in a fishtank, and then burns his wife in her bed...that was pretty insane.

2) Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer - TV Salesman
HernySerialKillerWeb.jpg
I saw this movie about ten years ago, with a bunch of friends. I had never heard of it before, and had no idea what to expect. And after it was over, I was like "why the fuck did you rent that?". I had a sick feeling in my stomach all night. And the crazy thing is, it's based on a real person. There are about a dozen really sick death scenes in Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer, but the only one I haven't blocked out is when he stabs a tv salesman repeatedly with a soldering iron for charging too much, then smashes a TV over his head. (Henry had a keen sense of the ironic.)

1) American History X - The Curb
AmericanHistoryWeb.jpg
Nothing...absolutely nothing...will ever come close to the curb scene in American History X. It's the most violent thing I've ever witnessed on film, and I couldn't get it out of my head for days. I will never watch the flick again because of it. If you've never seen the movie, I won't describe the scene, I'll just say it involves a curb, a mouth, and a boot. Man...my jaw hurts typing this. It's number one on the list, for sure.

Finally, a special Halloween treat...Wikipedia's list of gory death scenes, categorized by type of demise.
(Wikipedia's awesome.)

AND IF YOU LIKED THIS NONSENSE, CHECK OUT THE REST. WE'RE BIG IN JAPAN.

What about the baseball bat scene in Casino, when Joe Pesci character and his bro are killed?

said ubisuck on October 31, 2005 10:42 AM.

Clearly somebody hasn't seen Irreversible, the French movie with not only the most graphic violent scene EVER, but the longest (hardest to watch) rape sequence ever put to film.

said Cyril @ Defunct Games on October 31, 2005 10:48 AM.

WTF? The first Robocop when Murhpy dies to a hail of gun fire. That is the most violent death scene ever! He died but was brought back alive as Robocop, but he still died!

said Rdot on October 31, 2005 11:32 AM.

I agree with ubisuck, not only should the baseball bat scene from Casino be on this list it should be #1. Seeing Joe Pesci and his brother beaten to death with bats then buried alive is one of the most disturbing cinematic scenes ever.

said are_dee on October 31, 2005 11:35 AM.

Braveheart...that's all I gotta say.

said snowblind2000 on October 31, 2005 12:36 PM.

Dude, how could you leave out "A Clockwork Orange", arguable the most violent movie ever!

said Michael C on October 31, 2005 12:36 PM.

What, no Jesus Chainsaw Massacre?

I do agree with your number 1. While I have never experienced it, for some reason when I watch that I know what it feels like to have my teeth around a concrete curb.

said Yurko on October 31, 2005 1:00 PM.

beaten TO DEATH then buried ALIVE? yer an idiot

said Rdot's an idiot on October 31, 2005 1:23 PM.

Nothing from Saw or Saw II? This list should have a lot of revisions after Saw II came out this weekend - it's definitely the most violent thing I have ever seen.

said Erick on October 31, 2005 1:27 PM.

I think you need to make it "The Top 25 Violent..."
some these guys are right, especially with "A Clockwork Orange."

said KMT on October 31, 2005 1:49 PM.

I agree with the smiley on the curb. Just thinking of the guys teeth biting the curb gives me chills.

said jamEs on October 31, 2005 1:54 PM.

Number one is definitely American History X. Nothing comes close. What about the itty bitty pieces of brain on the back seat of the car in Pulp Fiction? It was certainly gory but in a funny sort of way.

said eSm on October 31, 2005 2:20 PM.

I still vote for the death scene in Heavenly Creatures

said Marie on October 31, 2005 2:36 PM.

Nice list, man. I think I would have included that scene from Sin City where Mickey Rourke dismembers Elijah Wood (only cuz I can't stand that little twerp) while he's still alive and then has Wood's Siberian Huskies (or whatever dogs they were) eat the rest of his body except for the head. You know which one I'm talking about.

in Irreversible a guy gets his head beaten in with a fire extinguisher until his head looks like a puddle of chili. and unlike most movies they show the extinguisher hitting his face each time. grossest thing ever.

said bailey on October 31, 2005 3:07 PM.

the 1st silence of the lambs was good but the one in'hanibal' when he scores the guys stomach, throws him over the balcony hanging by his neck and his intestines spill out SPLAT on to the street below, while he twitches was sheer disgust-o-nificent

said hanibal on October 31, 2005 3:29 PM.

overall a good list

said dcoy on October 31, 2005 3:33 PM.

what about the death of elijah wood's character Kevin in Sin City?? He got beat to death by a giant Mickey Rourke and then tied to a tree and eaten by a wolf

said thebizzareone on October 31, 2005 3:43 PM.

you are a pussy if you will never watch american history x again. it is a powerful film and the intensity of the curbing shows racism in a much more powerful way than if he just killed someone with a gun. that movie is amazing and moving

irreversible's fight scene was pretty fucking sick, i didnt know if it was real or fake

said nate on October 31, 2005 3:56 PM.

AMERICAN HISTORY X! yes. i had never been disturbed by any scene in a movie until this one. this is the only time i gagged from a movie. number 1

said Eric on October 31, 2005 4:11 PM.

The list is solid as it is. We all were affected by different movies at different times in our lives which made them stand out in a certain order. The list is good. There are violent movies out there, but these are fairly violent and make a good stand themselves.

said bob on October 31, 2005 5:03 PM.

For me the most disturbing act of violance I've ever seen on film was from Saving Private Ryan. The scene with the knife fight. I honestly can't describe it in any more detail than that because I've blocked out most of it. It's the only scene ever from a movie that I could never subject myself to watching again.

This from a guy who laughed out loud through most of Faces of Death.

said Talondel on October 31, 2005 6:12 PM.

Cyril nailed this one in the second post. The Irreversible fight scene was brutal.

said king keepo on October 31, 2005 6:23 PM.

Definetly nailed with American History X. That shit was beyond crazy.

said nivek on October 31, 2005 6:55 PM.

honestly casino should've been 1 or 2 joe pesci and his brother getting beat to death with bats and than burried half alive was like watching the american history x curb seen on replay

said btronik on October 31, 2005 8:38 PM.

When I saw the list I started saying to myself "it better have "American History X" on it!!!" Great list, and I can't wait to see some of the movies mentioned. However, to the Clockwork Orange fans...what are you thinking??? He beat a woman to death with a giant plaster penis and they cutaway. What's graphic or violent about that? Loved the movie, but it was more goofy than violent.
By the way, I know it's not as violent as some of the above, but I have to give an honorary mention to 'Near Dark' for the scene when Bill Paxon (a vampire) kills a guy, turns around and says "it's finger lickin' good". Then he's drinking a biker and says "I hate it when they ain't been shaved" Outstanding!

said S-Des on October 31, 2005 8:44 PM.

What about some of Rob Zombies Movies? I know they are sort of slasher movies, but still, nothing else has gotten the word sadistic placed in their rating, at least not that I know of.

said metal on October 31, 2005 9:02 PM.

oh, and lets not forget some of the alien movies, and the predator. cmon, skinning humans. Maybe its just me, American History X is a nasty seen. do you think that its bad that I watch this stuff, over, and over, and over......

said metal on October 31, 2005 9:10 PM.

Irreversible, all I`ve got to say. Watch it. Brings new meaning to disturbing. The French are idiots.

said Martin on October 31, 2005 9:12 PM.

Irreversible...'nuff said.

said MartinBlank on October 31, 2005 9:26 PM.

The Casino scene should be in there, but not top 2. Can't argue with the curbing, but the fire extinguisher scene from Irreversible has to be a close second, if not #1.

said Spreitzer on October 31, 2005 9:36 PM.

Hello? 2 words...Dead Alive. The whole film is a death-fest. Never have I seen so much blood & gore as in this 1991 flick (directed by Peter Jackson of the Lord of the Rings fame). And by the way, it's really funny too, just the right blend of the humorous & the outright sick...
You guys were right about American History X...that "bite the curb" scene still makes me flinch...and Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer left me disoriented & totally shell-shocked, it was the "reality" of it, almost like it was reality being filmed as opposed to actors "acting" on film...
All sick shit, and I LOVE IT.

said Tim on October 31, 2005 10:44 PM.

have any of u seen ghost ship? i mean u must of the movie i guess is pretty shitty but the beggining were that fuckin cable just glides through like 100 people wat a groosum mass massacre

said corpsegrinder on October 31, 2005 11:08 PM.

now come ppl u cant forget the classics nothin was crazier and left more to the imagination then predator, wen arnold hears the shout of death and then u see the predator pull out his skull and spinal cord, that shits sick

said jumbalya on October 31, 2005 11:11 PM.

now i know u didnt really want to include slasher movies but in pumpkin head wen that wicked beast drops that hot cut up chick from a 60ft tree and u see her flappin body splatter on a rock below

said rasta on October 31, 2005 11:15 PM.

Yeah that scene in Ghost Ship was pretty grim...
You all should check out all of the Romero "Dead" movies too...superior f/x, especially, in my opinion, in Day of the Dead where that asshole millitary douche gets literally torn apart at the end (and the scene is homaged in Shaun of the Dead, where an equally douchey bastard is torn apart in the same fashion).

said tim on October 31, 2005 11:16 PM.

Checkout the movie 'King of the Ants'. Definitely not #1 violent, but should be right up there. Has multiple blows to the head with a golf club as part of a really slow torture. If I can remember correctly, Norm (George Wendt), from Cheers is dishing out the pain.

said Rob on October 31, 2005 11:36 PM.

CORRECTION: Forgot this was 'death' list. The kid who gets tortured in 'King of the Ants' doesn't die, but his torturers definitely do :) It's worth a view.

said Rob on October 31, 2005 11:39 PM.

dude you want gore and violent death watch land of the dead the 2005 edition. a guy gets his face peeled off by his lips and up from a zombie. and thats one of the nicer ones

said chris on October 31, 2005 11:40 PM.

Teletubbies on PBS makes me violently ill. I can't explain it. I hate myself.

said Joe Me on October 31, 2005 11:52 PM.

I agree with the #1 pick. everytime i look at a curb, i think of that movie. so, therefor, i have that movie running through my head, every day.

said ace on November 1, 2005 12:12 AM.

Look folks, "portrait of a serial killer" was by far the most upsetting of movies. The horrible scene where Henry and his partner sack an entire family is too much. If I'm not mistaken, director of the movie did not tell the teenage boy what he would see upon entering the set of the living room, so that he would be able to offer a realistic response.

said Joe Me on November 1, 2005 12:32 AM.

Watching Irreversible in the theater was me at my most squeamish....

said tipper on November 1, 2005 12:47 AM.

what about "High Tension" when the mother gets her throat slit, or the dad gets his head smashed open by a piano, and let's not forget the scene in the beginning with the severed head...blah, freaky as hell

said piercedstar on November 1, 2005 2:54 AM.

Has everyone forgot all the asian movies, for example Audition? The scene, where the girl cuts the mans leg off whit a wire...Im not sure if he dies but it has also many other freaky scenes, and its defenettly worth watching

said SirWille on November 1, 2005 4:59 AM.

I Would like to add to what tim said I just saw Ghost Ship on the 31. And the Scene with the hook to the Neck. That Is about as guesome as all those people getting sliced. Also why not Go with the top 100 films and do votes on them.

said Chris on November 1, 2005 5:18 AM.

Ichi the Killer!!!!!!!!!

said haroon on November 1, 2005 7:50 AM.

Those french can sure make a brutal flick. Irreversible has already been mentioned but Dobermann hasn't. It's not a splatter film as such but some of the scenes must make splatter writers kick themselves that they didn't think up the violent demises themselves,

One that sticks out is when a guy gets his face pushed onto the asphalt while hanging from a speeding car. You can really see his head getting thinner. Totally sick.

Nikita's acid bath scene's worth a mention too.

said PsychoCowboy on November 1, 2005 7:53 AM.

For the record the Irreversible fight scene (and rape scene) were fake -seems quite obvious to me but someone questioned it. Get the Region 1 DVD and check out the special feature on the effects used, its pretty interesting.

I also thought that Man Bites Dog was quite a disturbing movie in many ways, while not a viscerally disturbing as Irreversible, it was quite high on the list. Audition also had me quite on the edge of my seat watching that.

Oh yeah and I was surprised Cannibal Holocaust wasn't on the list.. I mean granted the movie was a complete and utter piece of crap - they 'supposedly' really killed some animals for some of those shots (although I have a strong suspicion they doped the hell out of the animals before hand). Either way it was the only movie I had scene that was so violent visually that it became boring (and I fell asleep) - still its a good thing to consider for the next list or something :D.

said Ryan on November 1, 2005 7:56 AM.

In a similar vein to history X, what about Lock stock and two smoking barrels when big chris (vinnie jones) slams that guys head in the car door repeatedly. you dont see anything, but its pretty nasty!

said mike on November 1, 2005 8:25 AM.

The Passion of the Christ

said barney on November 1, 2005 9:55 AM.

Come on....How about the movie Predator?! The Predator skins a guy alive and then rips his entire spinal cord and skull out in one piece and saves it as a "war" souvenir, among lots of other gruesome deaths.

said dsrtfox1942 on November 1, 2005 10:15 AM.

another French movie, Baise Moi, was notorious for its use of porn actresses and real on-camera sex as well as for its extreme violence. you think the Irreversible rape scene is brutal?

as for the violence, there's a scene where a dude gets a gun shoved up his ass and shot through. pretty nasty.

said Paul on November 1, 2005 10:35 AM.

I'm glad someone mentioned Romero's "Dead" movies. Day of the Dead was phenomenally well done (considering the era) and has to be the most in-your-face graphic movie I've ever seen. I've seen others that were more subtly graphic (Saw was bad), but Day of the Dead just showed you everything you didn't want to really see.

Another one worth mentioning is "Very Bad Things". Hanging the hooker on a coat hanger while screwing her? I just found that seriously disturbing.

said serengetiman on November 1, 2005 10:51 AM.

Pffft, there are some good ones ere, but this is all fairly tame. What about the shooting/suicide at the end of David Lynch's Wild at Heart? What about the Predator of Sil From species tearing out people's spines??? That's gotta be worth more than fishtank drowning. OOooh Oooh I got one, what about the Hellraiser's hook thing, where the meathooks on chains come zipping in out of the darkness and rip people into tiny bits? Ahhh what a cool idea for a list.

said Rhesusmonkey on November 1, 2005 12:24 PM.

? Where is Sin City in all this???
sin city had absoloutly the most terrible death scenes, i would expect one of them to be on the list...

said nethaniel on November 1, 2005 12:51 PM.

all the picks were perfect... and i completely agree with the #1 pick.... i still haven't watched that movie since seeing that scene.

said Kristin on November 1, 2005 1:24 PM.

This list should obviously be retitled "top 10 most violent hollywood death scenes from the shelves of your local smalltown blockbuster" as all these rate about a 2/10 on a scale exteme cinematic violence.

said pissonarock on November 1, 2005 1:24 PM.

The list seems great. The only thing I would have added is the opening minute of Narc. Particuarly when the drug dealer stabs the random guy in the neck, followed by Jason Patric running up to him and hearing the gurguling noise the dying guy is making! Not to forget Jason Patric schooting the drug dealer and a mom in the stomach! That is the most intense minute in film as far as I'm conserned. Whew! When I first saw this scene, I didn't watch the rest of the movie. It wasn't until a year later I was able to finish it.

said Nik on November 1, 2005 1:29 PM.

I have to say the 2 scenes from 'Irreversible' are easily the most violent things I have ever witnessed. No mention of 'The Passion of the Christ' either. The torture scene is so awful. These lists can be debated forever. Someone will always disagree.

said Ev on November 1, 2005 2:03 PM.

One scene that embedded itself in my mind was from the film "Hamburger Hill", where an American Gunner fills a Vietcong so full of lead he explodes. It may have been cut from video and dvd releases. I saw it in the theater.

said burgerking on November 1, 2005 2:25 PM.

What about the dry-sponge electric chair death of Michael Jeter's character Eduard Delacroix in The Green Mile? That was one of the only movie death scenes that has ever made me wince, and I'm a horror fan.

In the late 60's there was a movie made called "Last House on the Left" Where a young girl is gang rapedthen disemboweled, made to watch her own intestines being ripped out of her stomach. Everything is on screen and the most disturbing part is when one of the killers reaches inside her abdomin and rips out a handful of guts. Few people have heard of it becasue it was banned in many different regions of the United States because of it's extreme violence and few people had ever seen anything remotely like it before. In fact the only version I've ever seen was a copy made from someone else's copy of a VHS tape. It's highly recommended to true horror movie fans.

said Marcus on November 1, 2005 10:32 PM.

Wait, wait, wait... all ya'll forget the most gruesome of all!!! The cop getting his ear sliced off in RESEVOIR DOGS should have definitely made the list.

I love that move, but have to fast forward that scene cuz Mr. (insert color) thoughtlessly peels that cop's ear off with a knife, then puts gas on him while his mouth is all taped up... should have made the list for sure... Its really hard to watch and that scene stays with you for a long time...Ear removal shot in Resevoir Dogs... Re-do the list.

said msg on November 1, 2005 10:47 PM.

Out of pure humanity, Henry takes the cake. Gore and special FX can be very realistic (Day of the Dead, Saving Private Ryan..etc..)but that dosent make it disturbing. Henry: Potrait of a serial killer is just too disturbing for me to watch again. The deaths are senseless and are very graphic. The family death/rape scene is just tasteless and horrible.

said DGBT on November 1, 2005 11:44 PM.

What? No one can remember back to the end of "Taxi Driver” That was very disturbing and very realistic especially because the tension built to that final carnage

it wasn't jared leto getting hacked in "American Psycho" and the death of the yellow bastard in "Sin City" should have been in there. I mean, the guy gets his genitals ripped off by Bruce Willis bare hands and then gets his skull beaten to nothing but yellow goo and chunks of bone. I don't care if its black and white, its still graphic.

The Movie man Bites dog has a bunch of intense scenes. Example: The maincharacter is raping a pregnant woman in front of her husband and forcing him to watch. In the next scene you see their opened carcasses strewn out around the kitchen. Example: Kills a man in front of his own son and then runs after the sunand strangles him with his bare hands.
He also kills an old woman just by yelling at her. intense. Irreversible should be on thier too but somebody already talked about it.

Those are all really violent, but what about the Final Destination movies? I mean, a guy getting a ladder through the eye, or the cop getting the log through the front window of the cruiser, or the air bag going off and impailing the lady to her seat are just a few of the deaths. Or what about Assault on precinct 13, where the guy stabs the other guy in the eye with an icicle. And, as someone else has mentioned, the passion scene where jesus is whipped? Also, does no one watch anime? I mean, sure they are animated, but some can be quite graphic. Like in Ghost in the shell, where people die because someone else is making them shoot themselves? Or even in the cowboy bebop movie, which i realize is not extremely violent, but the way Vincent kills them is quite disturbing.

I would have to say the number one in my book is from "Wings" (silent, 1932) where one of the main characters is flying a stolen german plane (WWI) stolen from behind enemy lines trying to get back home and his pal sees the plane and tries to gun it down to avenge his friend who was shot down (but he's really shooting his friend, but doesn't know it), and you get this terrible closeup of the guy trying to alternately take evasive action and get the attention of the other pilot to let him know that it's him, but it fails and he gets gutshot by several .50 machinegun rounds and tries to maintain control of the plane while cunvulsing and puking up blood, dying knowing that it was his best friend that did it. The best friend finds out when he lands to cut a square of cloth from the wing for a trophy and the woman who's farm the plane has crashed on insists the he come in talk to the dying man and see firsthand what destruction the war is bringing. Grim and exceedingly bloody. The general popular opinion after the Great War was "there will never be another" so movies about the war made before the second world war pulled no punches.

said Lars on November 4, 2005 1:23 PM.

I know the original list didn't include "slasher" flicks, but one scene I totally have to turn away from is the eye-gouge in Fulci's "Zombie". The zombie grabs a woman in the next room and VERY slowly pulls her onto a huge splinter of wood from the door that pierces into her eye (full camera shot) and then I guess into her brain. Yeah, you can tell when the dummy head comes into play, but it's still creepy as hell!

Having read all the posts up till now (yeh i was bored) I'm glad to see Sin City was mentioned. It was a movie that i thought of imediately after reading the list.

I arrived here from ebamsworld. In light of American History X being #1, one mentionable thing is that among that sites vast collection of crazy video clips, there was one a while back where a kid really tries to do whats done in the movie.

Its amazing how the point of such a great movie can be completely ignored by idiot kids, and the only thing they do take from the movie is more violence.

said Inazone on November 10, 2005 5:50 PM.

Definitely American History X - still think that was the most brutal way to fuck someone up. Casino - how about the guy's head in a vice until it popped? "We seize this occasion to thank Mr Mel Gibson for his most excellent contribution. We also wish to thank his very generous sponsor, Heinz Ketchup." Too bad that flick went so far, that it rocketed out of the gore orbit to wander aimlessly in the grotesque galaxy. As a doctor, I have a very good idea just how much a normal guy can bleed and fast, and STILL have the strength to drag a patibulum all the way up the Golgotha. (And please spare me the miracle theories, the Romans weren't supposed to realise their victim was in any way special. Otherwise, c'mon, they would never have laid a finger on him!) Still, the aramaic bit is very realistic, you can trust the ear of a child of the Middle-East.

My personal two cents aren't the goriest, and I can't honestly say that "mine is bigger than all of yours", but please, kindly bear with me for a minute. When I was attending a somehow stict religious school (pardon the pleonasm), we were once shown a movie about early christians' persecutions. Very explicit and gory and all. We were only 7-year olds, for Jeez's sake!!! It gave me bloody nightmares. And I'm not cursing here, they really were bloody! The PTSD images as still as vivid as the first day... I can still see this guy getting his teeth pulled off with a pair of pincers. The rest I somehow managed to blur out, Freud would be proud. It is true that since then, growing up during the whole war of Lebanon, I had the unenviable occasion to see many real deaths. Nothing too "fancy" (except for that bit about heads parading in the streets on perches), but take my word for it : American History X is not No 1 simply because of the scene itself, but because this is so frightfully real. I mean, what's the ratio between racists and serial killers in the real world? Think about it... Zombies, aliens, predators, robocops, vampires? Pshah! True stuff IS the scariest, period.
As a true Sam Raimi fan, allow me to end on a note of delicious irony. Ten years after that holy cinematic session (holy with holes?), at the innocent and tender age of 17½, I came close to being expelled of the same school... because I got caught in possession of a Playboy issue. Now, THAT's a truly scary thing to ponder.

I would argue that just about everyone interested in this ought to look up two movies, the first being the unrated version of Hellraiser II, with additional material on Julia's bed with the psychosis patient and the knife. That and all of Cannibal Holocaust, which is nauseating. That movie has several gruesome simulated rapes, actual mutilation of animals, and shots of people committing (fake? Hard to tell.) cannabilistic acts. It was filmed by Italians in the 70's and pitched like Blair Witch, as an actual documentary.

I'm thinking this list is designed for people who generally don't specialize in overly gory movies. And I think it's the violence and not the gore that is being rated. American History X, I agree with. It's not particularly gory, but the unimaginable VIOLENCE of that scene-the desire, hatred, and vitriol that was being expressed in this scene makes it top the list. Something like House of 1000 Corpses (the hotel scene in Devil's Rejects was pretty violent) is just gory, or cheesy, but not violent.
My two cents on disturbing violence in film is Men Behind The Sun.

said Fet on August 25, 2006 10:50 PM.

August Underground's Mordem is by far the sickest, most twisted thing I've ever seen. It's the closest you can get to snuff without watching the real thing. In comparison, it makes shocking films like Cannibal Holocaust and even Salo look a little tame. The Flower of Flesh and Blood was a pretty violent death as well - I'm sure it served as an inspiration to Miike when he was filming the climax of Audition. I suppose it was a little on the cartoonish side though. And, a little closer to the mainstream, how about the scene in Suspiria with the room full of barbed wire?

said Ryan on September 8, 2006 4:09 AM.

That opening scene in Saw II where the girl has a bear trap strapped on her head, and has a minute to find the key (which is buried inside her small intestines,) That movie leaves you feeling a little messed up for a little while.

Yes, this are sick violent scenes shown to people in general, Hollywood has a lot of responsability for some of the new murderers, this scenes of course are based many times in real sick people, but I'm not so sure that it has to be shown to almost everyone who wants to see that, but anyway violence generates more violence, I live in latin america and I've heard or seen worst cases even more sick or violent, i'm not any antilatinamerican living here, but i show will say that here people most of the time is grown up with violent thoughts so, I see the U.S. is going to the same hell, here there are lots of sick people consecuense of being thaught violence and accepting it like something good or normal, I hate Holliwwod because many people in here see the U.S. as an example to follow and many times the only things we see from the U.S. is this kind of movies, of course people in here doens't care to show them to children, and finally I will say that I have seen the entire movie of American History x, when I was no more than 15, so most of the things people are knowing here from the U.S. are learn in your movies, so with that entertaiment what kind of latin people you think you are atracting to go there, not all of us are so sick, maybe with traumas because of our culture, but, you have atrackted to people even more insane than in those movies, I mean more, meaning that here those killers see you as targets, for no reason, and that is why many people with the help of ignorance things that you are like that, another reason why someothers hate the U.S., personally I don't hate the U.S., but I hate many things you are letting to happen, I don't care about our sick believes in god or things like that, but, I don't thing you should let the hell of pure violence spreads even more in the U.S., I think that religion doesn't help, but you gotta teach values to your children or I personally think that the U.S. is going little by little become like latin america and who knows what else, If I seem to like the U.S. is because of some of your efforts to base your life on science, but with irrational violence you will loose your power sometime in future, I don't know.

There is a movie called Gates of Hell in which a man has his head drilled through with a table drill. You get a close up of the drill entering his head and exiting the other side and everything in between. Disgusting!

Also, let's not forget about half of Day of the Dead, especially where a man is ripped in half by bare hands and then watches his legs being dragged away from his torso.

said Seth on November 21, 2006 10:27 AM.

Hostel... personally not an extreme fan of this movie (considering the entire first half was essentially a porno, sorry guys) but if you want a violent and disturbing movie... there you go

I would have to say the last 15 minutes of Cannibal Hollocaust have some of the most disturbing death scenes I have every seen becasue they look so real. More so than American History X.

said Justin Saxman on January 6, 2007 4:25 PM.

Yes thers alot of good choices here and i think like previously mentioned everyone has a slightly different view on whats intollerable in the way of cinematic violence but isnt that what draws most of us to watching these movies..speaking for myself i love anything out of the ordinary and movies with scenes that push boundaries whether it be shocking or downright disgusting.. has anybody seen that movie karla?
about the barbie and ken murderers? even tho it wasnt too gruesome it was truly disturbing.

this list kind of sucks.... if you wanna see nasty, check out Irreversible, Ichi The Killer, Cannibal Holocaust, and Guinea Pig.

said james on February 18, 2007 8:54 PM.

I am just going to say this.... these scenes are not bad, they are just funny, if you want to see violent, check out Irreversible when the guy gets his face smashed off with a fire extinguisher. Watch Ichi The Killer where he cuts off his tongue and also when they torture the dude with hot oil and the scene where they cut off the girls nipple. Also watch the torture scene in Audition. Watch all of Cannibal Holocaust and Guinea Pig 2. And just for the hell of it watch Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer. Have a nice day.

o yea! SAW sucks!

I have to admit that when I was reading through your list I was ... "yea Ok it would suck to be dismembered, or torched".... And even I agree that Tarantino is farce, although very good farce a.k.a. Natural Born Killers" ... But yes you are right American history X, and that scene where he was made to bite the curb...! Then the boot...man, I watched that 10 years ago and now im tormented by that again.. thanks..

Good list.
Also, Fight Club. It's not a death scene, but when Ed Norton almost beats the blonde guy to death.. that was pretty brutal.

one of my favorite death scenes was in resident evil, when the guy went through what i referred to all of my friends as the "cheese grater" - the laser criss cross grid. there wasn't much of a shock value, and it didn't look like a painful way to go, but man every time i saw that scene i would yell "ohhhhhh sheeeeiiiiiiit!!!!" in a high pitch voice and jump up and down... yeah i'm an idiot.

OBVIOUSLY NOBODY HAS WATCH BAISE-MOI OR CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST The scene in Irreversible was calm in comparison to those, plus in irrevirsible that chick looked like she wanted it!!!

said Mark on April 17, 2007 9:08 AM.

What about ichi the killer? or Battle Royale? Some pretty Mainstream movies there, but not the most violent by a long shot!

said Tom Meese on April 21, 2007 6:21 AM.

How 'Bout Hot Fuzz? A guy gets his head smashed in by a falling spike, a woman gets stabbed with shears in the throat, and someone gets a spike through his chin and out his mouth.

said Jongo on April 21, 2007 9:14 PM.

I expected something from one of Tarantino's movies to be up there.

said Snowzi on May 4, 2007 1:48 AM.

curb to mouth scene.... it is called a "smiley". How about Resevoir Dogs (sliced ear, gasoline--Steeler's Wheel)!!

said Charles on May 4, 2007 9:10 AM.

good list. but i would have had:
(a). the scene in 'Identity' where a convict has a baseball bat shoved down his throat, but well, yeah, the film was sort of a slasher flick
& on a lighter note:
(b). Monica Belluci's rape scene in Malena!
...How could you? she's Monica Belluci for crying out loud! I lost my hard-on watching that scene!

said Dreadnought on October 23, 2007 3:07 AM.

Well... what about Hostel and Hostel 2? Final Fantasy series? Saw series? Being honest violent films dont scare me. But japanese horror films like The Grudge and The Ring are scary as hell to me. Btw in predator they didnt show the scene when the guys are scinned off alive.

said ...34 on January 24, 2008 4:51 PM.

Polanski's Macbeth.
Shogun Assassin or any of the film series entries it was cobbled from.
Threads...all Britian gets nuked into the medieval era.
Does anime count? Fists of the North Star details exploding heads, mid-sections, eyeballs and internal organs. Has an action figure also.

said Mr. Pompass on February 13, 2008 6:32 AM.

has no one here seen Brick? off screen, but with the screaming it couldnt be any other way. No bats, fishtanks, soldering iron... just fists.

The curbstomp scene was awesome, dont mess with another mans car.

said djJD on December 5, 2008 12:01 AM.

i'm glad to see that the beating in casino came up many times in the comments, it disturbs me ne end!!! the curb biting is defo nasty in AHX but i'm more shocked by when he gets raped & has his head bounced off the wall & is then left naked with blood pooring from both ends (pretty grim) but the most blood curdling scene ever is from a clockwork orange where alex is kicking, slapping & slicing while singing merrily.

said mad gamer on October 1, 2009 9:30 PM.

Dose any one remember the gangster movie were the guy got raped up the but and then was killed by a knife up the but? I can not remember which movie that was. That seen was brutal. I can't erase it from my memory.
AHX, Clockwork Orange, & Fight Club are some of my favorite movies of all time. And of corse any Mafia movie is great.
