Great Danes

"Shopgirl" ***1/2 (out of four): In an age of dumbed-down rom-coms, Steve Martin's old-fashioned romance is a rare treat (despite a nearly fatal voice-over narration) thanks in large part to a dazzling Claire Danes.

Former "wild 'n' crazy guy" Steve Martin has a romantic streak in him. With "Roxanne", "L.A. Story" and now "Shopgirl", Mr. Martin is injecting a much-needed intelligence into the romantic comedy genre.

Of late it seems in order to classify as a romantic comedy you need to bring down the level of humor to the scatological. I suppose "There's Something About Mary" can be thanked for that. If you want to create an old-fashioned romance, you need to set the film long ago and call Merchant-Ivory. In "Shopgirl", Mr. Martin confounds that problem by setting the film in his own version of L.A.

"Stay" Away

"Stay" *1/2 (out of four): Stylish directorial exercise masquerading as a psychological drama.

stay.jpg

There is a trend emerging from this spate of "twist ending" films: they can be judged by how stylishly they are directed. The more straightforward the presentation ("Fight Club", "The Sixth Sense") the better the film. Rod Serling never needed fancy wipes, jumpcuts or special effects. And he got it done in half an hour. Conversely, when a director has to resort to camera trickery, it is clearly to distract the audience from a lacking script. In the case of "Stay", the writer David Benioff concludes a lackluster trifecta ("25th Hour", "Troy") with a stylish but meaningless puzzle masquerading as a psychological drama. Even the title doesn’t make any sense in the end.

I remember the White Album being much slimmer

Sumos.jpg

Up for something a little different on a Saturday night?

Tickets are still available for the World Sumo Challenge, and barring a return of the Dove Real Beauty campaign, you'll never have another chance to see this much cellulite at the Garden

You thought I wasn't gonna post this?

I may save it as my wallpaper.

Delay's mug shot on Smoking Gun, and about 10,000 blogs.

The Power of the Global Internet (seriously)

I spend so much time searching for stupid video clips, crazy flash movies and time wasting games to post here, it's sometimes easy to forget just how amazing the power to communicate instantly over the web is.

There's a thread over on Metafilter today that really brings this home. A poster asks information on finding an old Viennese phonebook from 1938, in the hope of uncovering the name of the street where his late grandfather lived. Within hours, not only had the address been tracked down, but 15 pages of official records relating to his family from the Holocaust Museum. Read through the entire thread, it's an incredible story

It's sometimes easy to forget how lucky we are to have our lives enriched by this thing we waste our days away on.

Ok, my “moment” is over - we can now return to the stupid crap.

404 Error

Whoops! We're not sure if it was your fault or ours (probably yours, we're good that way) but you've encountered a FATAL ERROR!!! Or at least, a pretty grumpy one.

Specifically the Latvians who run our server are telling us in a weird accent "Smarty error: [in evaluated template line 6]: syntax error: unrecognized tag 'mtfeed' (Smarty_Compiler.class.php, line 580), Comrade!". Ain't life a bitch.

If you want to vent, email our slacker of a webmaster. Otherwise, we'd suggest going back, using search, or clicking around aimlessly on this page like a moron.

Have fun.
