“It's a metal, Jim, but not as we know it”

200510172346
“He's dead, Jim”. “Beam me up Scottie”. “Ahead Warp Factor 5”.

The thing about being a Trekkie (Trekker?) is that no matter how much ridicule you face, life has a way of imitating art that just manages to keep your head above water.

  • Communicators? Flip phones!
  • Spaceship Enterprise?? Space Shuttle Enterprise!!
  • Viewing screens??? iChat AV!!!
  • Transparent Aluminium????

Yes, transparent aluminium.

Worthy of Your Time

time-vcr.jpgtime-apple.jpg

On the left, from December 24, 1984. On the right, October 24, 2005.

Here's the Time story on the new iPod.

And here are the Top 40 magazine covers of the last 40 years (neither of these made the cut).

Escaping the Office Space

200510171436 200510171438

The picture Aquaman showed of his new fishbowl came across my desk at almost exactly the same time as this locked room mystery game. One of life's little synchronicities that makes Mondays so fun.

Office Space

IMG_0832.JPG

Here's a picture of my new digs. Our company is in the midst of massive reconstruction, which means, for the next year, I'll be sharing this cozy alcove with TWO fellow employees (this picture was taken while sitting on the third desk).

In a related story, here's a great ambient ad from today's Adrants:

Sneak preview of iPodGuide.tv

Ipodguidetv

A couple of us spent the weekend whipping up a companion site to this one. iPodGuide.tv is exactly what it says it is - a kind of TV Guide for your iPod. We figured that, with the new video capabilities of the iPod and only a few actual shows available on iTunes, there are going to be a lot of people hungry for new content for their iPods. And while illegal bittorrent downloading may be the choice of some, other prefer to keep their download habits a little cleaner.

That's where iPodGuide.tv comes in. At the moment, we're covering mainly news & “how to” tutorials. But we're expecting a whole raft of publishers to make their short films, viral videos and animations available in the new iPod format, and this site aims to give you the lowdown on where they all are.

The site is still in “beta”, *(which means there are some known design bugs we have yet to work out) but feel free to come over and take a look around. And click on some ads while you're there, why dontcha (or, for that matter, the ads on this page - servers don't grow on trees).

iPodGuide.tv - a guide to the best video content for your iPod.

End of plug.

That's what Smurfs are dying for

200510170952
Over the last week, you may have read about the latest UNICEF fund-raising animation from Belgium that depicts the bombing of a Smurf village. I held off posting about it until I managed to track down some actual footage of the animation itself, but thanks to Transbuddha, you can now see a short clip.

Believe me, the image above is nothing like as disturbing as the clip itself. God only knows how creepy the full length short will be.

The Bush Effect

BushEnviroment.jpg

Ever wonder why those tree-hugging liberals are always bitching about the Bush administration's record on the environment? Check out this recent Rolling Stone article for a nice little summary on why you should be upset too.

Anyone see this last night?

721-raiders1.jpg

Bill Romanowski - NFL hitman, crying his eyes out on 60 Minutes to sell a book.

But in between the tears, fondly reminiscing about breaking Kerry Collins jaw in two places, ripping Dave Meggett's finger off or crushing his own teammates eye socket during practice. But in inflicting all those brutal hits, it seems Romanowski did a little suffering himself, as he suffered about a dozen concussions in his last few playing years.

Good luck with that book Romo. And try to stop drooling during the autograph sessions.

404 Error

Whoops! We're not sure if it was your fault or ours (probably yours, we're good that way) but you've encountered a FATAL ERROR!!! Or at least, a pretty grumpy one.

Specifically the Latvians who run our server are telling us in a weird accent "Smarty error: [in evaluated template line 5]: syntax error: unrecognized tag 'mtfeed' (Smarty_Compiler.class.php, line 580), Comrade!". Ain't life a bitch.

If you want to vent, email our slacker of a webmaster. Otherwise, we'd suggest going back, using search, or clicking around aimlessly on this page like a moron.

Have fun.
