Apple - pure Genius

200510121434
So, now I can download Lost to my video iPod the next morning for $1.99 from the iTunes store. My head just exploded in a media orgy.

UPDATE: I found this tutorial on the apple site - preparing your home movies for iPod. It looks to me like it's now just a two step process to rip a DVD with handbrake and then export it to iPod via iTunes. Which could probably be converted to a one-step “drag DVD to iPod” droplet with automator. Which of course, would be very illegal and very wrong, so don't do it. I'm just saying, that's all.

Can I get an oh-man?!?

ernestangley.jpg

I caught an episode of Ernest Angley Ministries while in Florida last weekend. Unbelievable. The one I saw had a "curing deafness" theme. God works in mysterious ways, but God's servants have managed to add an assembly-line quality to miracle-making:

1) Have "deaf" people walk up to you.

2) Say a few words of prayer, put your hands on their faces, then shout loudly. Much like the way you'd scare the hiccups out of a friend.

3) Proclaim to the audience that they've just seen a miracle. That's all the proof this crowd needs, apparently.

One guy, who was only deaf in one ear, was asked how much better he could hear. "A little, I think." Wrong answer. Satan was involved, we were told. And then Angley smacked the doubter in the forehead. This was wild TV.

Here's a great back-and-forth between people who will leave all their money to Ernest and people who will forever ridicule them.

Lost - more than a TV show.

200510121106
I have just turned on my computer this morning, and haven't checked all the blogs yet, so maybe I'm rehashing something that's already been talked about to death, but a co-worker (thanks Matt) just pointed this out to me.

Last week, we looked at The Hanso Foundation at http://www.thehansofoundation.org, the fictional web site of the company who built the Bunker on the island. Interesting but not too deep.

Well, it turns out that is you add an “s” to the url to access a secure server, you get a completely different experience - https://www.thehansofoundation.org. A url, which leads you here. A mouse, a speceship sound, a weird soundtrack, and a morse code title that translates to “a long time ago, on an island far, far away”. My geekboy spine just shivered.

And then, if you add an “S” to THAT website, you get this, which looks to me like something just waiting to be hacked.

Looks to me like Lost is no longer just a TV series, it's a full-blown ARG.

Wednesday is New Comics Day

37254_ful.jpgThis week's comic to look out for is Infinite Crisis #1 by Geoff Johns and Phil Jimenez.

About 20 years ago, DC Comics released Crisis on Infinite Earths, a brave but flawed attempt to reboot decades of confusing continuity via a 12 part mega-event. When it was over, the DC Universe was simplified to make it less confusing to newer readers. Gone were the multiple earths that housed alternate versions of Superman, Batman and others. Killed and/or erased from existance were longtime characters like Supergirl and the Flash (the classic Barry Allen version of the character). It was an unprecedented attempt to deal with the confusing backlog of shared character continuity and the result was not only a loss of what made DC comics so fun but also the continuity tinkering created a need to do this sort of spring cleaning every once in a while.

For the past year, starting with the Brad Meltzer-written Identity Crisis mini-series, DC has been building up to this new event. Identity Crisis led into the 80 page Countdown to Infinite Crisis which in turn led into 4 separate Countdown mini-series plus various issues of other DC titles like Wonder Woman and JLA and now (for those of you who still have any cash left to spend) we have the actual Crisis itself.

The weird thing is, at this point it isn't clear yet what this 21st century Crisis is going to consist of. Will the Multiple Earths be brought back? Will major characters die? New characters be introduced? Are we talking reboot here or just some sort of shift in the status quo?

Either way, this series is being drawn by Phil Jimenez, the perfect choice to follow in the footsteps of past Crisis artist, George Perez (who will actually be involved in this series on a couple of levels as well including the cover shown above). Jimenez' artwork is detailed and energetic and handles a universe of characters well, just like Perez.

If you want to try to catch up on what you've missed so far in the various Countdown series, check out DC's Crisis Counseling page.

Tomorrow is the official opening of The Rink at Rockefeller Center.

And later this month, even more fun just a few blocks down the street.

Trial by Choir

"The Gospel" ** (out of four): Writer-director Rob Hardy's telling of "The Prodigal Son" set against the backdrop of politics within the black church. Aside from mediocre writing, sloppy direction and uneven acting, it succeeds.

thegospel.jpg

After the death of his mother, David “D.T.” Taylor, a promising gospel singer, turns to a career in show business and becomes an R&B sensation. When his estranged father, a Pastor in a Southern church, takes ill, David must return home to confront the family, friends and community he left behind. This is the foundation for “The Gospel”, writer-director Rob Hardy’s promising but flawed take on “The Prodigal Son”.
