So, we admit it, we are really late to the table with Lost - most of us here at YBNBY only picked up the DVD box set of Season One, so if you've read this all before, just shut up.
So what the hell is going on? (Warning - spoilers abound, so click through at your peril)
1) The island is Purgatory. This one is a real hot potato with Lost fans because it means you basically have to subscribe to a Catholic mindset for it all to make sense. The people on the plane all died in the crash, and now they have to try and atone for their past sins before moving on to Heaven or Hell. Hence all the flashbacks. Or, if you're Hindu, I guess that means it's about Karma. I personally have a suspicion that the bodies they found in the cave are, in fact, themselves from 50 years earlier, on a failed karma attempt. If this is the case, the final episode will end with all the cast who don't resolve their previous life issues wandering the beach again as the plane explodes.
2) The island is a government experiment. Which makes The Others the scientists or the Army. The creatures are some kind of sentries to guard the most sensitive areas. The black smoke that dragged Locke into the hole? Flying nanobots. I'm not sure I buy this as it requires too much X-Files-type back story. I suspect the truth is much more elegant.
3) The island is a zoo/prison/auditorium/theme park. If so, then JJ Abrams ought to be ashamed of himself, because this type of thing has been covered in TV series like The Prisoner, The Twilight Zone, The Village, The Matrix and The Truman Show ad nauseam. *Yawn*
4) The island doesn't exist. Either it's all happening in the mind of one particular character - possibly Locke on his Dreamquest (shades of St. Elsewhere!) or the whole thing is flashing through the minds of the passengers as they plunge towards the water after plane breaks up. Remember, Charlie's tattoo is from Strawberry Fields Forever, where “nothing is real”.
5) The island is alive. This is kind of cool. The island is alive and is able to give the crash victims what they hope/fear. Some of the visions - especially the ones at night - are the Island sleeping. Think Charlie Brown talking to his school building.
6) It's all about the numbers. 4 8 15 16 23 42. You think you've spotted all the instances of Hurley's lottery numbers that resound through the series? Check out this exhaustive rundown. Here's a sample - the heroin is found in a statue of the Virgin Mary, who's Feast of Assumption is 8/15. Charlie's tattoo is from Strawberry Fields Forever, which is the 8th track on the Beatles 15th US release. This kind of thinking can drive you crazy.
7) It's about Time. Time travel theories abound on Lost. Are the survivors in the future? The past? Endlessly moving through a time loop? One theory has it that the bodies of the couple found in the cave are Jack and Kate from the future who go back 40 years into the past, possibly to try and stop the crash. Which may mean, that Desmond in the hatch is their son? Head.... just....exploded.
8) The island is Armageddon. And Walt is the antichrist. I found it pretty chilling when it was said that strange things happen around him, like that bird flying into the window. Which means, I guess, that Claire's baby is the Messiah. After all, we've yet to find out who the father is - maybe it was an immaculate conception (an idea already introduced by the scam against Locke.) I wish I was more up on my “End Times” knowledge to work this out. Any Mormon's in the house?
9) It's a reality show. All the “survivors” are participants in a game who refuse to let their guard down. Otherwise known as Richard Hatch's Wet Dream.
10) Ok, now I'm going to hit you with my own theory. It's one I haven't seen anywhere else, primarily because it's so friggin' unlikely. And it has a lot of holes in it, but hey - at least it's mine, and on the 1% chance it turns out to be right, you heard it here first. And to add to the mystery, it's in INVISOTEXT!!! wooohooo. use your mouse to highlight below to read.
The Island is Camelot. It is said that one day Arthur will rise again with his knights from their burial underground (The Hatch?) Jack is King Arthur, Kate is Guinevere. Sawyer is Lancelot, fated to steal Guinevere from his king. Locke is Merlin the Magician. Charlie & Claire are Tristan & Isolde (I believe Tristan was a bard). The raft represents the Knight's Quest and they will ultimately find The Grail, whatever that is. Which means that (and this is where it gets sticky) the French woman is Morgana, who should turn out to be Jack's half sister. And her son/daughter Alex will be Morgan Le Fey, the one who will ultimately meet Jack in battle.
Man, if I'm right on that one, there's going to be SO many disappointed people.....
Feel free to add your own theories in the comments.

Scara, great rundown, and the invisible textthing was pretty funny (but not a chance in hell of being correct)
I lean towards the Armegeddon thing myself, just because Claire's psychic was so scared of her unborn child, and Walt (aka, the second coming) definitely does have supernatural powers (see Polar Bear) and the others want to get rid of him.
Locke: Two players...one light, one dark.
So, to be clear. we think Walt is the messiah and Claire's baby is the ant-christ?
Yeah, something like that. Maybe they're not the actual main guys, but they're on the sides of good and evil. The psychic was seriously freaked out about Claire's kid. Hell,
I don't think it's the purgatory one though, that's been floating around since episode one last year.
I think all theories have some substance behind them. whatever the truth, there have been so many story lines hatched that you just want to keep watching. Whoever came up with the Lost idea is a genius...or just has good basic understanding of the mind and behaviour, a Psychologist perhaps or even the Devil. What if the show itself has been created by the real anti-christ...what if its luring people to watch it and transmitting subliminal messages to us to make us bad. Look at the increasing natural disasters occuring in the world: "a sign according to many religions as signifying the End of the World".
so now that the episode "Orientation" is out... with all KINDS of interesting info.... any new theories out there?
The last thing I read on a messageboard was that if you look again at the movie that was played, there are a few jumpcuts, where the film had been damaged from being overplayed, and respilced. It becomes clear that there's important information in the missing frames, and the islanders embark on a hunt to find the small pieces of celluloid and piece it back together.
Morgan LeFey was Arthur Pendragon's half sister. His Son/Nephew who he fought to death in battle was Mordrid. but good theory otherwise.
I think that they somehow got stuck in the spanish magazine. I saw a earth with one island on it. The little kid is the one who creates everything in his mind, like the P.bears that he saw on the magazine. Thats as far as i have got but also i think that Hugo and Walt are very important because of their luck and unlucky abilities.
