Where Are They Now - The White Shadow

WhiteShadowWeb.jpg

The story...Ken Reeves, power forward for the Chicago Bulls, blows his knee out and takes a job working for his old high school buddy as coach of George Washington Carver High School's basketball team. The plot for every single episode went something like this...player gets in trouble, player asks coach for help, coach gets player out of trouble...groundbreaking tv, and I was glued to it every week.

So where are the Carver all-stars these days? Keep reading to find out. But before you do, can you name all eight players? (Hint: their last initials were H, S, J, T, G, C, R and G)

Coach Reeves - Ken Howard
ReevesWeb.jpgHowardWeb.jpg
You've probably seen Ken Howard in a bunch of stuff, mostly playing characters who are nothing like Coach Reeves. An uptight congressman on Clear and Present Danger, an uptight judge in The Net, or the uptight father of Val Kilmer in At First Sight. See him play the father of Cameron Diaz in the upcoming In Her Shoes.

Hayward - Thomas Carter
HaywardWeb.jpgHaywardOldWeb.jpg
Thomas is the first of three directors on our list, with many tv shows, and a few movies to his credit. He directed Samuel L. Jackson in Coach Carter, and has a movie called Freedom House coming out next year.

Salami - Timothy Van Patten
SalamiWeb.jpgPattenOldWeb.jpg
Director #2, Timothy is HBO's go-to guy. Sex and the City, Deadwood, about 200 Sopranos episodes, and the upcoming series, Rome. Looks alot different, doesn't he?

Jackson - Erik Kilpatrick
JacksonWeb.jpgJacksonOldWeb.jpg
Erik was responsible for the best episode in the whole series. When Jackson got killed in a convenience store robbery, the series hit its peak. Since then, there have been a few TV movies, and his own website has him being very active in local theatre in St. Louis.

Thorpe - Kevin Hooks
ThorpeWeb.jpgThorpeOldWeb.jpg
Starting point guard, and player responsible for the show's name,(Reeves, I'll always be behind you guys. Thorpe: Yeah, like a white shadow.) Kevin Hooks is the third director in this group of Carver alums. With a ton of tv stuff, and a couple movies (Passenger 57) to his credit, Kevin's most recently directed episodes of Cold Case, Alias and Lost.

Gomez - Ira Augustine
GomezWeb.jpgchicoWeb.jpg
Ira turned into Freddie Prinze for a really awful TV movie in the 70's...that's all I got.

Coolidge and Reese
CoolidgeWeb.jpgReeseWeb.jpg
Byron Stewart and Nathan Cook both went on to other TV series. Byron has the rare distinction of playing the same character on two different shows, playing orderly Warren Coolidge on St. Elsewhere. And Nathan Cook starred on the short-lived series, Hotel. Many of you will also remember Nathan as the guy that gives Clark Griswald crappy directions in Vacation.

Goldstein - Ken Michelman

Not really sure about the whereabouts of Mr. Michelman. IMDB has him taking parts in a few crappy tv shows, and he was a dealer in Vegas Vacation. That's all we know. Then again, he didn't have much playing time for Carver, either.

This was one of my favorite shows in television history, and I wanna help with your update.

Thomas Carter is a two-time Emmy-winning director for "Equal Justice," an ABC drama series that featured "Malcolm in the Middle's" Jane Kaczmarek and "Sex and the City's" Sarah Jessica Parker. It ran on ABC in the early-1990s. Carter won his Emmys back-to-back in 1990 and 1991. One of the directors he defeated, in 1990, was David Lynch for then-cult phenom ABC's "Twin Peaks."

Nathan Cook died at age 39 in 1988 from an infection. It says this on Internet Movie Database Board. And commentaries on the Season 1 DVD of "Pilot," by Mark Tinker and Jackie Cooper (who won an Emmy for helming that episode), confirm this. Cook's passing was in June 1988, shortly after the five seasons of ABC's "Hotel" (1983-88) had reached its conclusion.

Dave, thanks very much. This is great. I don't know how I missed the death date on Nathan Cook. IMDB says it was due to an allergic reaction to Penicillin....what a drag that is.

Thanks for the update! Please clarify if Nathan Cook is alive. I vaguely remember reading several years ago that he is not.

Regarding Nathan Cook's passing in 1988, could you tell me if he died from Stevens Johnson Syndrome or Tens which is an allergic reaction to medication.

Thank you,

Terri

I am pretty sure that Ken Howard was in "Crossing Jordan" but I haven't seen him on it lately. Is he still alive or did he die off the show?
