This week's comic to look for is Mome #1.
It's a slow week for new releases so looking back a bit to the recent releases we find an exciting new comics anthology from Fantagraphics Books called Mome. Describing itself as a "comics literary journal", Mome is published quarterly and will contain the same collective of writer/artists each issue, allowing them to evolve individual stories or their own style over time. The artists chosen are on the cutting edge of the medium, some fairly unknown and some, like Paul Hornschemeier or Jeffrey Brown, have been making a pretty good career in the indie comics world the last couple of years.
Among the stories appearing in the first issue:
- Paul Hornschemeier's "Life with Mr. Dangerous", the first of a six part story that introduces it's protagonist, Amy, via three phone conversations she has with three different people.
- Jeffrey Brown, in a new autobiographical strip, explores the motivation of an artist and whether he himself has anything left to say.
- Gabrielle Bell's "I Feel Nothing" depicts a morning of alcohol, cocaine and awkward sexual passes between two neighbors, one of which is at a loss for where he should go in life.
- Newcomer Jonathan Bennett, illustrates a morning walk through his Brooklyn neighborhood in "Dance with the Ventures".
- Andrice Arp in "Jewels of the Sea" adapts a Japanese fairy tell about two gods, one of the land and one of the sea, who trade roles for a day.
Like all anthologies, this one promises a mixed bag of style and quality. But if nothing else, it will be a platform for comics experimentation for some time to come.
