This week's comic to look for is Winter Men #1 by Brett Lewis and Jean Paul Leon.
The Cold War was an underlying element in a lot of great comics during that age. Without the arms race and the space race we may not have had characters like the Hulk and the Fantastic Four. Superheroes have often been a stand in for nuclear weapons (and now today in some comics they stand in for weapons of mass destruction). If superheroes were real and comics were history books, America would have overwhelmingly won the arms race with their abundance of costumed do-gooders. But now that the Cold War has ended, what has happened to all the decommissioned Soviet superheroes?
Winter Men, the new comic from DC's Wildstorm line, looks to explore post Cold War Russia, in a universe where super powered individuals were built up rather than missiles. Where are these out of work heroes now? Using these living suitcase bombs as it's jumping point, the book looks to explore the problems of life in modern day Russia.
Wildstorm comics have been building up their line again with successful new comics like Ex Machina, Desolation Jones, and Silent Dragon. These books take a more mature look at your typical comics fare and Winter Men looks as if it will do the same.
