So I'm watching TV this past Sunday, and I come up on a movie I've seen literally 50 times before. It's a classic, but the thing is, it's also a movie that I can never sit through without shedding a tear or two (or twenty) when I get to the end. I tell myself there's no way it's gonna get to me this time, but sure enough, the end comes and I find myself wiping my eyes with my t-shirt before anyone sees me...Jesus, I am such a pussy.
So I thought I'd list my top ten tearjerker flicks of all time, but for guys only. (No Titanic or Love Story on this list) It's a public service, really. If you happen upon one of these, turn the channel quick before anyone comes in. Trust me, you'll thank me.
PS: No, I'm not talking about the movie above. I'll get to the Sunday movie later.
PPS: Obviously, feel free to tell me how wrong I am.
Brian's Song

You knew this one would be here (even though it's actually a tv movie) Brian Piccolo and Gale Sayers compete for starting running back on the Chicago Bears. They're also best friends, right up to when Brian dies from cancer. This movie is also a great example of how music plays a huge role. "Theme from Brian's Song" is a classic.
THE SCENE: Gale Sayers wins the George Halas award, and tells the audience Brian Piccolo should be standing there instead
The Natural

The classic tale of Roy Hobbes, the aging ballplayer who single-handedly brings a last place team into the playoffs. Side note: I found an interesting site that listed a bunch of similarities between Hobbes and Jesus Christ. (ie:gone for 30 years, wounded in the side)
THE SCENE: It's kind of a stretch, but when Hobbes hits the lights and jogs around the bases, a few tears of joy may leak out.
My Life

Not sure how many people know this one. Michael Keaton is dying from cancer, but holds on for a year to witness th birth of his child.
THE SCENE: In his last days, Keaton's family actualy brings the circus to his front lawn so he can see it with his little girl. I know it's cheesy, but it still gets me.
Remember The Titans

A racially integrated high school football team, learning to get along in Alexandria, Virginia in 1971, wins their state championship in an undefeated season. Along the way, defensive captain Jerry Bertier has a car accident the week before the championships, and goes on to compete in the Special Olympics.
THE SCENE: Bertier's funeral at the end of the flick.
Ordinary People

It's weird, but this is also my favorite movie of all time. In the middle of the flick, when Tim Hutton loses it after his friend commits suicide, and he goes to see Judd Hirsch...classic. (Music - Pachabel Canon)
THE LINE: Hutton: "I love you dad" Sutherland: "I love you too."
Hoosiers

One of the four movies on the list based on real events. Obviously, truth can be sadder than fiction.
THE SCENE: When the little guy sinks the free throw that wins the semi-finals. I'm a sucker for the underdog.
Meet Joe Black

I never said they had to be good movies, and I hardly ever sit through the full twelve hours that it seems to run. But at the end, when Anthony Hopkins walks over the hill to the other side...nice.
THE LINE: Hopkins: "Should I be afraid?" Pitt: "Not a man like you".
Pay It Forward

This one actually pisses me off. I was feeling good. Haley Joel Osment is being interviewed for his great idea...happy ending, let's go home. Then you kill him? What sick screenwriter had this brilliant idea?
THE SCENE: The candlelight vigil outside the house, and once again it's the music that really does it. Calling All Angels, by Jane Siberry.
Field of Dreams

Many think it's the best sport movie ever made. When Kevin Costner realizes it was all so he could meet his dad again...well let's just say you could easily argue for it being number one on the list
THE LINE: "Hey Dad, you wanna have a catch?"
Rudy

It's no contest. This was the one I was watching on Sunday, and this is the one I will never be able to sit through without turning into a twelve year old school girl. It's pathetic, really.
THE SCENE: Pick one...the players leave their jerseys on the coach's desk, Vince Vaughn scores and says "That was for you.", Jon Favreau screams "Who's the wildman now!", Charles Dutton claps and walks off the field, Rudy sacks the quarterback, or the ultimate, when they carry Rudy off the field.
Come to think of it...screw these flicks.
Stumble This

What about Backdraft?!?!?! That movie will make even the toughest guy in the world cry when the one brother gets killed at the end...come on man do your research!
"Remains of the Day". To come so close to real love and miss it by a moment was almost too much to watch.
"Empire Strikes Back". Han Solo gets frozen in carbonite just as Princess Leia finally thaws out her libido and professes her love to him. When she just misses catching up to Boba Fett's ship before it takes off with Han's frozen body I get a little teary eyed.
That reminds me. I forgot "The Poseidon Adventure". When Shelley Winters swims through the underwater compartment, and tells Jack Albertson to give her locket to the grandkids. I haven't taken a Carnival Cruise since.
For me, the one sure tear jerker is near the end of The Iron Giant when the robot saves the town because he decides he wants to be a "Superman". Kills me every time.
Totally!
there is this movie that will get any man to cry its called brotherhood of war and i believe that any guy who sees it will cry.
check it out
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0386064/
u cried? HAHAHAHAHHAHAAHAHAH
AHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHH
u r the biggest loser ive seen.
you're such a girl
P.S that was for you. loser
what a bunch of loser movies - real men cry when they see real men survive ( or lose ) in dangerous situations:
Sheen (Apocalypse Now)
Ford (Bladerunner)
Eastwood( Million Dollar Baby)
DeNiro (Raging Bull)
Get a grip - our dad's didn't die @ Normandy for nothing!
can never make it through frequency .. lost my pops at an early age ... he was a firefighter too ... just the thought of being able to talk to him now and change history to be with him ... dont like country that much but dammit that garth brooks song in the flick is awesome
Movies that make you cry? You Homo
Exactly!
Definitely some very gay un-manly entries on your list. My Life? That's a big budget Lifetime original movie. Anything involving a terminal illness is a big cliche. Meet Joe Black? You're going to grow boobs
How can you leave off Saving Private Ryan? Those are manly tears of honor & glory!!
THE GREATEST TEAR JERKER SPORT FILM OF ALL TIME...
SLAPSHOT - When Reg Dunlop tells owner your sun looks like a Fag to me...
http://members.aol.com/sstribute1/RegFag.mp3
SIMON BIRCH!!!!
totally forgetting ARMAGEDDON. I know u are a total retard because this is not on your list but Remember the Titans was. RETARD. Watch some good movies for a change. The Natural? The Natural? Yeah it made me want to try harder in baseball, but cry? Hell no. What about The Dirty Dozen? Saving Private Ryan? You are too gay for words. Hey why dont you put Uptown girls on your list while your at it you flaming homo. Bring it
Anyone got a copy of Uptown Girls?
Alfie w/ Jude Law.
The title alone was enough to make me not watch it. I got sucked in during a sex scene and was fixated to the bitter end. I sat for a good hour after the movie reflecting on my past relationships. If you've only been with a few women, it may not mean much. But if your in the double/triple digits, it really hits home. Some really powerful scenes in the movie, one of the most prolific was when Alfie goes to visit his best friend and his wife.
Oh no, Gren. Please don't break it to all the girls out there. You're not hanging up your dick, are you?
You said "Guy Flicks". My Life is the anthesis of guy flick. Pay It Forward has labia written all over it.
How about "Something For Joey"?
I actually didn't mind Meet Joe Black, only because I could sit and stare at Claire Forlani for days and not have a problem with it.
Peace.
I'm sorry, I can't agree with all of those. Deaths don't make me cry. The victory of the underdog (Titans, Hoosiers) does.
The two that always get me:
"Angels in the Outfield"
SCENE: Everyone in the stands starts waving their arms.
"Dead Poet's Society"
SCENE: All the boys stand on their desks as Robin Williams leaves the classroom.
Dead Poets Society hands down. "Oh captain, my captain." That and "Freedom!!!" from Braveheart make me blubber like a dirty bitch every time.
Dead Poets Society. That's a great one. O captain my captain
Old Yeller... such a guys flick. Made me tear up. Always will
If you want to cry like a little girl you need to see The Champ with John Voight and Rick(y)Schroder. Whenever I feel dead inside, I watch that movie.
I totally agree with Rudy and Field of Dreams - the H-bomb of guy tear jerker flicks. The other that gets me is Cinema Paradiso. If you can get past the subtitles, you're in for it.
I agree with some of the list...I'd like to add a few of my own that have made me cry. Glory was a tear jerker...when the guy yells "Give 'em hell 54!!" And you know they are all going to die.
For some reason Patch Adams made me cry when his chickie dies...just pretty emotional.
But the movie that tore out my heart and held it in front of me was Big Fish. I was tearing up for the last 20 minutes of that one!
I almost included Glory, and you're right about the scene. Not so much on Big Fish, though.
What about Good Will Hunting? When he is confronted by Robin Williams that the beatings he took that has scarred him for life isn't his fault.
What about Braveheart or Gladiator? Both of these have some of the most heart-wrenching scenes in movies. The one where Wallace's wife gets killed and the scene where he finds out that Robert the Bruce is playing for the other side. The emotional impact of those two scenes blows anything on this list away. Then you have Gladiator with the scene where Russell Crowe arrives too late to save his family. That scene is the reason Crowe one the Oscar that year and it is absolutely heart-breaking also.
This list sounds like a great line up for Lifetime. Are you sure you did your research cause this is not a list that makes any guys i know cry. Rudy?
You're forgetting the greatest action-comedy-drama-love story-tearjerker of all-time!!!: ARMAGEDDON
"Harry, I love you!!!" as Bruce Willis sends Ben Affleck back up to the ship so he can continue boning Liv Tyler. A classic movie in guy tearjerking history.
Wow. You must be gay. Crying over a movie is unacceptable for heterosexuals.
Gladiator...Maximus dies to save Rome...nuff said...
ROCKY.......screaming for his Adrian while he can't even see through his battered eyesockets at the end of the fight....
WHERE THE FUCK IS BRAVEHEART?!?!?!
It's all about soundtrack for me. Braveheart Rules.
What about the truman show? Private Ryan? Black Hawk Down?
Cool Runnings....after they crash at the end and then carry the sled across the finish....i don't know why but i can't make it through that part.
You should be beaten for even suggesting that men should watch "Pay It Forward" ..... but since Rudy is on the list, I'll let it slide this time.
A movie not on your list is Return To Me with David Duchovny and Minnie Driver. The scene that got to me in that movie was when David Duchovny returned home after his wife died and the dog refused to leave the front door because he was waiting for her. It was the dog that got to me.
What about The Perfect Storm. Thank God I was watching it at home on DVD because my eyes were spouting so many tears at the end I would've been embarrassed to leave the movie theater.
Unstrung Heroes is one of the only ones that gets to me. Lot of great movies mentioned here though. Hoosiers especially.
Mr. Holland's Opus. Richard Dreyfus is amazing, and when his old students come back and finally play his "Opus", with his deaf son in the crowd, just breaks me up every time.
yo that My life shit ain't no joke. it be coming on Turner South and TNT real late sometimes and I cry every single time yo. Hearts and Souls makes me cry too its got Robert Downey Jr. in it. Glory makes me cry too. Im kinda a pussy though for good acting.
Seeing Rudy on this list made me cry. Weak--the only fighting Irish I like are the IRA. Truman Show is no joke though. Also Breaker Morant and Gallipoli--Australians at war is some sad shit.
I woulda expected to see Frequency on the list...
I have to agree with "Good Will Hunting". Can't make it past the "It's not your fault" scene dry eyed.
Not many people know it, but a movie from the 80's called "The Dog Who Stopped The War" has a really sad scene at the end when the dog dies. He gets buried in snow to show the kids they should stop their fighting each other. It's sad. I cried when I was young. Haven't seen it since the 80's though.
Some of those movies suck goat balls. And thanks for ruining a lot of those movies by posting spoilers, ass.
If you've already seen them, why do you care about spoilers? And if you haven't, how do you know they suck goat balls?
newer one..ya may not have seen it but it's a great one in every sense of the word "Unleashed" with Jet Li
What about Man On The Moon? I couldn't stop crying over that. Also, in Band of Borthers when they pass the Concentration Camp.
Bunch of pussies! If you cry in a movie you bassically have failed at life.
I mean you can get a little emotional. Tis alright to get choked up sometimes, then vent it as an emotional outburst of destruction and violence.
Chokers:
-Das Boot (when all the nazi's get bombed, don't ask why and im not a nazi)
-Docu-drama Hiroshima (the child burning to death in the ruble)
-The Shawshank Redemption (90% of this movie, or maybe I just had a cold)
id nominate armmagedon @jerry magwire fuckin movies always make me cry
How about miracle, the story of the 1980 US olympic hockey team quite possibly one of the best movies ever
What about Hardball and Sixth Man...if you say you didn't cry in those movies you are a LIAR.
I have to agree with nick on Miracle especially when one keeps in mind that Herb Brooks died in a car accident just before its release.
is this the most commented on post in the history of YBNBY. You guys are all fags.
It's a terrible movie, but for some reason, By the Sword, with Eric Roberts and F Murray Abraham always chokes me up.
What about John Q? When he's about to kill himself so his son can live, and he's telling him how to be a man..... I saw that when I was in the army, and ended up sitting in a roomfull of teary eyed soldiers.
Didn't see my text show up on the last one.....
What about John Q? When he's about to kill himself so his son can live, and he's telling him how to be a man?
I saw that movie while I was in the ARMY, and ended up sitting in a room full of teary eyed soldiers.
I am not Jewish but...
Schlinder's List.
"Something for Joey". About the 1973 Heisman Trophy winner John Cappaletti. He has a kid brother (Joey) that is fighting cancer when his brother is playing football for Penn State. Big brother wins the Heisman and gives it to Joey at the end of the movie because the kid is so brave while he's dying. My younger brother and I watched it together and were bawling like sissies at the end. You know it's got to be good if it makes you cry in front of your brother...
Schindler's List. Had to watch it for a class. I NEVER cry during movies. Never.
And when they put those rocks on his grave, I couldn't believe it, but I started crying. And then I caught myself and called myself a few names, and then watched a few more people put rocks on there and I started crying again. Wow. That's a sad movie.
Watched "Homeward Bound" with my kids. Last scene, the old dog comes running over the hill to the open arms of the little boy. *sniff* Damn dog
Big Fish - Now that's a tearful movie
"8 Seconds" boys... I cry like a teething baby with Jondus, at the end of that one, when Tuff rides the bull for 16 seconds; 8 for the National Rodeo Championship... and then 8 more (beating the bull with his cowboy hat) for Lane... and since it's a true story, you cry about it later too... it would be like if Rudy broke his neck and died on the field, right in front of TouchDown Jesus...
8 seconds man.... im tearing up now
Actually just got done watching Grave of the Fireflies. That is the ultimate tear jerker hands down. One of the great war movies also. If you havent seen it be prepared for some emotions. It blows Bambi into a million little pieces.
For me it is "We Were Soldier" starring Mel Gibson. The film goes back and forth between guys fighting and dying in Vietnam and the wives back home being given the news of their deaths. I cry like a baby.
For me it is "We Were Soldiers" starring Mel Gibson. The film goes back and forth between soldiers fighting and dying in Vietnam and the wives back home being given the news of their deaths. I cry like a baby every time I see it.
For me its always Backdraft and Saving Prvate Ryan. But don't tell my wife.
A Knights Tale
William (Heath Ledger) meets up with his father after 20 years (cry cry cry!)
I like the movie "Passion Of The Christ" , the scene where God is brutally whipped. It makes me feel so sad and cry.
And then any movie where you see the hero/heroine get punished for something they didnt do.
What about Glory, when they make their glorious but doomed assault and lose their lives but establish their dignity unto the ages of posterity? Dignity always makes my lip quiver.
Im from Detroit, so it being a movie where the Tigers are involved has a lot to do with it, but For Love of the Game. A semi-chick flick with the love story in it, but I cant help getting goosebumps when in the ninth inning Costner is looking at the scoreboard and realizes hes thrown 8 perfect innings, and his best friend and catcher(John C Reilly) comes out to the mound. Reilly-"Hey Chappy, you alright?" Costner-"Has anyone been on base?" This whole exchange ending with Reilly telling him just to get it over the plate and "The boys are backing you- cause we dont stink right now. Tonight, right now we're the best team in baseball" it gets me every time.
"Affliction" - I can't even barely watch it. IT makes me want to rip out the insulation in my house, makes me want to break windows, and hate my father even more.
Nick Nolte is a small time sheriff investigating a murder, but along the way HAS to confront the memories of his sadistic father played in flashbacks (or maybe not...) by James Coburn.
It is subtle, negative, slow, and painful.
Nick Nolte is ripped in half, and shrinks into nothing when his father is around. He tries not to be but is vicious to his wife Sissy Spacek.
If I ever wanted to kill a charecter in a film, it would the man who destroyed Nick Nolte with a gun, and lots and lots of bullets.
Nick Nolte!
White Squall - for all the same reasons as Dead Poets.
Ok - definately not a guy movie, but there is a part in "A League Of Their Own" that gets me. When Tom Hanks comes into the locker room with the "Dear John" letter. Very tense moment.
Otherwise, the other big ones are easily Saving Private Ryan, The Champ, and funnily enough Michael J Fox's final episode of Spin City
Life is Beautiful, Malena, Cinema Paradiso...Italian film jerkers...
I have to agree with adding Gladiator, Braveheart, Shawshank Redemption, and John Q for just the scene with Denzel giving his kid life instructions.
But what about Gardens of Stone? End of the movie when James Caan gives the speech at the grave at Arlington, then the 21-gun salute and taps as the credits start to roll...water fountain I am!!!
How about A Simple Plan? Bill Paxton and Billy Bob Thornton play brothers who are about as close as they can be. One of the final scenes (not to give it away), which is Thornton's last scene, and the agony you see on Paxton's face is the first scene that made me weep. Literally, weep, tears streaming down my face, in the theater, trying to hold myself together. It was a horrifying thought for me to do what Paxton's character had to do.
Having just seen King Kong this afternoon, I think I can add another suggestion to this list.
miracle when herb talks about his boys winning the gold against finland and he talks about all-star teams while you watch the team teks the podium with the gold.
there's something about mary- when mary choses breet favre over ted and ted walks away. while he's walking away he throws the baseball he got for warren into the water. sob
just reading about the pay it forward one makes me want to cry. the first time i saw it i wasn't expecting it and i cried my eyes out. it had my boyfriend too...and hes not a easy person to crack haha
Ah....what about Shawshank Redemption?
Transformers: The Movie. Come on! Optimus Prime biting the big one? One of the saddest moments in cinematic history. Also Project X with Matt Broderick... seeing Virgil discover the dead chimp... so sad.
what about a beautiful mind.
when everyone brings him the pins i sob like a lil girl.
i forgot abuot brains song i watched that in a class in middle school there were no dry faces in the room.it was gym class also.lol
god i got a few that make me cry a lil .
braveheart when wallice dies.
and how could you not put in the professinal.poor leon
forest gump,seabiscut, and the pianist.
man i am a gian puss.lol
Bambi.
My money's on Stripes. Aside from a cast full of some of the best American comedic talents (Bill Murray, Harold Ramis, John Candy, John LaRoquette, Judge Reinhold, among others), this movie was the bomb when it came to jingoism, male-buddy-bonding, and scoring with hot chicks. Absolutely fan-friggin'-tastically awesome.
You men are sick.
Only war and sport make you cry?
And what is wrong with you people calling someone gay if they cry because of a movie?
How does THAT make someone gay?
Get help.
Most movies don´t make me cry. I especially hate so called "chick flicks". One of the few that made me really cry was Schindler´s list. Because it was true.
GETS ME WHEN I AM WAHTCNIG CON AIR AND HE FILLNAY MTEES HIS WFIE AND DUGHAETR
The Green Mile
wait hold on a sec. you are telling me that all you people CRIED during saving private ryan? it was a good movie, but NOT a tear jerker!!! it was a war movie, compeltely different, and if you CRIED during SPR you are an idiot. movies like "remember the titans" had emotional scenes in them (although i couldn't stop laughing as they sang "na na na hey hey good bye" as they buried their teammate!)
Being a soldier, the best movies would have to be saving private ryan, we were soldiers, armaggedon, and hamburger hill. Those are true spoken war movies. Anyone who has seen war will agree.
YEAHHH THE GREEN MILE ........ now that one is a sad movie i think ..
Ok, I'm a girl and I'm not supposed to post a comment on this but... I gotta tell you, I was expecting more from a list like this.
I'm not at all surprised by the sports themed movies, in fact, I think sports are probably the only emotional outlet manly enough for most guys.
But… well, there’re a lot more movies that will get to you hard enough that’ll make your eyes water without being sissy movies – even for women (I mean, I don’t think I cried in any of the movies listed here – sorry, but it’s true).
Ok, I don’t see a lot of guys crying because of a romantic love story but it makes perfect sense to get mushy over war movies, a father and son story or a brothers’ story, or even important values like honor, duty and self respect - each person knows where it hits them the hardest.
Men aren't supposed to feel at all (which is something that makes no sense), so it's understandable we see all these guys calling each other homos and the likes when others admit that they DO get emotional.
But people, of you think it’s not manly to cry when you’re hurt or feeling too much joy to fit in your heart you have a lot of growing up to do.
If you're not man enough to cry, you actually don't serve the world in any way. Men who don't FEEL won't reach out for people who need them, won’t reach out for their kids or their family when they're in need and if you're not here to serve others you're a good for nothing, no matter what gender you are.
Hell, soldiers, firefighters, policemen - they all cry.
I don't think they're all homos... do you?

Saving Private Ryan!
