Six months ago today, I began “The Moblog Project” - a sister-blog of YBNBY. The aim was to document my daily walks across NYC with my mobile phone camera, and upload the images as I walked. The quality of image from the camera (Treo 650) is pretty awful, but what it lacks in resolution, I think it gains in immediacy.
When you've set yourself the task of taking one photo every single weekday, the quality of the actual shots really goes up and down, but I thought it might be a good idea to take a look back over the last six months of images and pick out my favorites.
One of the great things about New York is there's usually something strange happening on the street. I doubt if the moblog would be quite as diverse if I were walking across Nutley, New jersey to get to work. The Maori warriors were standing on the street corner in full dress having a cigarette, I suspect before some kind of early morning corporate show of some kind. I'm not exactly sure what the orange guys is supposed to be, but he was very earnest about it. And the shot of the chicken cracks me up mainly due to how little anyone is taking notice of it, as if a giant chicken walking down the street is an everyday scene.
Ah, celebrities. My walk across town takes me past the ABC studios in Time Square, usually as the morning show guests are just letting out, and if that convergence happens, I usually take a snap. Below are Hayden Christenson, Denzel Washington, Christian Bale, Ty Pennington, Dianne Sawyer and The Naked Cowboy.
Some days I get pretty desperate for an image just to make the daily quota. The image on the left is a self-portrait in our company bathroom, which is where the center shot is also taken. The image above the urinals is of a Poker Flush (flush - gedditt??). And the sign on the right is affixed to a wall outside a convenience store in Lyndhurst, NJ, and always makes me laugh. I mean, would it be possible to fit any more spelling mistakes on a sign that size? Cafe Olé anyone?
I try not to take too many shots just of the city itself, but then I'm reminded that for readers across the country (or world) some recent images of NYC might be interesting viewing. These three were my favorites.
There's also always the temptation to include pictures of my kids, but I realize what's cute to me is not necessarily cute to everyone. But for the mothers out there, here are three to ooh and ahhh over.
Often I just snap away and it's only when I get back that I realize what I have, be it a segway, a lonely bride, or just a cute girl on a sidewalk.
And then there are the photos I take where I just wish I had had a better camera with me, because I really like the way the colors and/or composition turned out.
So there you go. All the Moblog Project pictures are archived here, and if you actually want to leave comments on any of them, head over to our Flickr Stream.
And with that, The Moblog Project is going to go in hiatus for a few weeks while I take a summer break and refresh my eyes. We'll be back in the fall with a more pictures and possibly a new format. In the meantime, if you are interested in becoming a Moblog contributor from wherever in the world you are, drop us an email as we're currently looking to expand the team.
