This week's recommended comic is We3 by Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely.
New comics actually come out on Thursday this week due to the holiday and this week's new comic to look for is the collected edition of the 3 part series We3. This was one of my favorite books of the past year, boasting some of the most innovative and downright mindblowing artwork of the year by former Authority and New X-men artist Frank Quitely. It is one of the most graphically violent comics I've ever read but at the same time, emotional and heartbreaking. Especially if you're an animal lover.
The US government has developed a hi-tech strike team that consists of a dog, a cat, and a rabbit that have been cybernetically enhanced and equipped with state of the art weaponery. When a nervous General requests that they be terminated, a sympathetic scientist sets them loose. If you've ever seen the film "The Incredible Journey", it's a lot like that but with more ballistics.
Grant Morrison, is one of the greatest writers mainstream comics has ever had. He's known mostly for his weird ideas but one thing that he always manages to bring to his books that not every comic writer can deliver is heart. Though almost all the dialogue in this book is broken english delivered by animals that have been scientifically enhanced for limited speech, it is enough to give each animal his own character. The dog, is the leader and wants nothing more than to go home and to be appreciated by "man". The cat is rebellious and always pissed off. And the rabbit has an unhealthy obsession with his own tail. With a lot of help from Quitely's artwork, Morrison makes these animals real characters trapped in a situation that mankind has made for them.
