So, W. Mark Felt's family has dragged him out of bed to end the "Who is Deep Throat?" guessing games and collect his book advance. Seems like the most common reaction is to feel a little down. Deep Throat could have been a huge name. William Rehnquist. Henry Kissinger. Pat Buchanan. Diane Sawyer. Even George H.W. Bush was eyed as a possibility.
Well, now we can look back and congratulate those who got it right. But first, let's laugh at everyone who got it so wrong:
•Journalism students at the University of Illinois can stop bragging about "solving" the mystery. They published a long-ass paper fingering Fred Fielding, Nixon's deputy counsel.
•Fox News Watch host Eric Burns spread it around that there was no Deep Throat -- Woodward & Bernstein invented him to make All The President's Men more interesting.
•This Time essay from 2000 guessed former Nixon insider John Sears.
•While leaning Rehnquist, a Detroit News article from February listed Felt among the possible choices.
•And finally, kudos to CNN for placing Felt atop its list of possible Deep Throat candidates three years ago.
