This week's recommended comic is The Walking Dead: Vol.3 by Robert Kirkman and Charlie Adlard.
The Walking Dead has been consistently one of my favorite books since it began last year. It's a zombie comic in the tradition of George Romero's classic film trilogy that follows a group of survivors as they make the best of their situation in an America that has very quickly become a zombie wasteland. The book focuses more on the characters and the relationships they must form with each other rather than on actual zombie action, that way when the zombies do show up it is sudden and surprising. The story has moved briskly so far. The survivors have set up and abandoned many camps, picked up some stragglers, and lost quite a few of their number. Writer, Robert Kirkman, has succesfully given us the impression that no character is safe here.
In this volume, the survivors come across a clasic element of zombie mythology. The fortress. It's not a mall, like in Dawn of the Dead, but a prison inhabited by the only inmates left alive. And like in all great zombie stories, it's never the zombies that you really have to worry about.
