Wednesday is New Comics Day

This week's recommended comic is Ultra: Seven Days by the Luna Brothers.

Ultra is a new comic published by Image Comics that looks at super heroes (super-heroines, to be precise) as celebrities to be consumed by our media-obsessed culture. The original comics collected in this trade paperback came with covers that parodied newstand magazines like Time and Maxim. This volume goes a step further by giving us some interior articles and advertisements from those magazines, making the point that if we as a culture are so obsessed with what Angelina Jolie and Jennifer Aniston do and who they sleep with imagine if they had super powers and wore skin tight costumes all the time.

Ultra focuses on three female super heroes and their fast paced lives, living in a big city, dating, going to parties, fighting crime. Except for that last part it's very reminiscent of Sex and the City. The real hook with this comic is the luminescent artwork by the Luna Brothers. The book looks like a storyboard of animation cels especially due to it's rich digital coloring. Like the story itself, it seeks out an even blend of realism and fantasy.
