It's been about a week since we last reported on the Contagious Media Showdown and I thought I'd file a short report on the current rankings.
Up until yesterday, I was beginning to think I'd been wildly successful in all my predictions. Crying While Eating has so far retained it's early lead, and frankly at this point is so far out in front with 240k visits , it may not be catchable. But my favorite to win, Ringtone Dancer had moved up to a healthy second, and Blogebrity had nicely settled into third. What's more, also as I guessed, the early leader Autoblogger was losing a lot of traction, and I still think will drop out of the top ten.
But then, just yesterday, a huge spike in traffic drove Forget-Me-Not Panties up into second, much of it, I think, coming from fark.com. Which makes sense - the concept of GPS panties to keep track of your honey's cooch is probably right up those farksters alleys. For me, the idea was always a little obvious, but it's nicely executed, with a design that at once looks right, but doesn't try too hard. Although, frankly, how anyone can fall for any of these is way beyond me. (then again, a certain member of the YBNBY editorial team once believed Britney Spears was re-recording Satchmo tunes, so it takes all kinds) It'll be interesting to see if that spike holds.
Other moves of note - Brainfreeze has been getting quite a few mentions on the blogs I read - another simple idea that can easily be described in a line, which i guess makes it perfect to be blogged about (or “High Concept” as Don Simpson would have said). And Aquaman's pick, Feloncheck, is also showing well. Dailydancer also coming along, probably in no small due part due to what I imagine is an awfully vigorous program of self-promotion they seem to have going in blog comments, but I just don't think it has the same level of “what were they smoking?” as Ringtone Dancer.
Biggest surprise for me is the poor showing of parishiltonfilms. I can't believe the Carls Jr ad is getting so much press, but that parody isn't. Although, one would have thought high traffic may soon have been followed by a cease & desist, so there ya go.
Still, it ain't over till the fat lady surfs, so we'll check in again next week to see how they're all doing. In the meantime, another shout out to Farting Saucers. There's life in that one yet.
