This week's recommended comic is Fables Vol. 5: The Mean Seasons. This is the 5th trade paperback collecting the brilliant ongoing Vertigo series written by Bill Willingham. The conceit of Fables is that it stars characters from every fairy tale ever written, both popular and obscure, who have been forced, hundreds of years ago, to flee the "Land of Fables" to hide out in our world, the contemporary but mundane "Mundy World". They have formed their own secret community right in the heart of New York City with another hidden location upstate for the non-human Fables like the Three Little Pigs. The story is innovative and fun, full of action, political intrigue, romance, great characters and graphic violence. It's beautifully illustrated by Mark Buckingham with the best covers being done anywhere right now by one of my favorite artists, James Jean.
This volume tells two tales of Bigby(Big B. or Big Bad) Wolf's days serving in WWII and gives us the long awaited birth of Bigby and Snow White's baby.
Recently optioned to become a feature film, this is one of the best comics on the stands right now. Jump into this volume or try out any of the first four books which are still available.
