I never was a huge fan of anti-smoking ads. I know smoking is bad for you. People have been showing me black lungs and yelling "cancer!" since I was 8. And I don't even smoke.
But this latest effort is fucking great. They've taken real suggestions from tobacco company marketing execs and worked them into a cheesy sitcom, complete with a bad laugh track and theme music.
The latest episode's description: "Is it possible to buy your way into being hip? That's exactly what the gang tries to do in this unforgettable episode. Hipsters beware!"
A quote from Seth Stevenson of Slate sums it up:
"The ads aren't saying: 'Hey kids, don't smoke! It gives you cancer, it makes your breath stink...' These new ads seem to say: 'Hey kids, tobacco companies are evil! And you're a tool if you get duped by their manipulative marketing techniques. Do you want to be a tool, kids?'
Not sure if it'll stop anyone from smoking. But, as advertising, I'm a fan.
By the way, this still looks funnier than NBC's Americanized version of The Office. Coming this month!
