Gallery Tour

Beautiful day this weekend so I did the Chelsea gallery walk between 22nd and 24th streets...lots of great shows out there right now.

Andrea Rosen is showing Felix Gonzalez-Torrez. The artist is well known for his interactive pieces, consisting of large piles of hard candy, grouped in geometric landscapes on the floor. The audience is encouraged to take a piece from the pile, with the eventual disappearance of the work acting as a metaphor for the artist's dying lover, and eventually his own. I was interested to learn the combined weight of the candies is usually equal to an average male or two. A sign at the entrance of the gallery stated the exhibit was timed to cioncide with the inauguration...draw your own conclusions.

Mary Boone has a new collection of sculptures by Marc Quinn. I first learned of Mr. Quinn at the controversial "Sensation" show at the Brooklyn Museum of Art back in the 90's, which included a bust of the artist, made of his own congealed blood. He's been creeping me out ever since. The current show includes a group of metal casts straight from the butcher shop.

And finally, Cecily Brown is at the Gagosian Gallery. Ms. Brown's style of painting is somewhere between abstract and figurative. The current show is mostly landscapes. Her past shows, the ones that made me a fan, used sexual imagery as their subject matter, which always seemed like a good way to kill an afternoon

By the way, Mr. Happy up there was outside Gagosian. The cropping out of his web address was unintentional.

Great post. Cecily Brown rocks! Her work is looking even more DeKooning lately it seems.
